Shaun Alexander won the NFL MVP in 2005. He has 14 children. And he built an entire school from scratch because one of his sons had nowhere to play football. Start with the football, because the football was absurd. In 05 Alexander ran for 1,880 yards. He scored 27 rushing touchdowns and 28 total, which was the NFL record at the time. He was AP MVP and Offensive Player of the Year in the same season, and he carried Seattle all the way to Super Bowl XL. By the time he was finished with the Seahawks he had 9,429 rushing yards and 100 rushing touchdowns in Seattle alone. On October 16, 2022 they made him the 15th member of the Ring of Honor, the third player from that 05 team after Matt Hasselbeck and Mike Holmgren. That is the part Seattle knows by heart. Here is the part almost nobody knows. Shaun and his wife Valerie have 14 kids. Heaven. Trinity. Eden. Joseph. Justus. Temple. Honor. Jedidiah. Torah. Eternity. Hosanna. Hope. Judea. Read that list again. Every single name was chosen on purpose. That is not a coincidence, that is a family telling you exactly what it believes before you ever ask. In 2017 they lost Torah. Valerie went to wake her up from a nap and she was unresponsive. She was 70 days old. Seventy days. There is no clean way to write that sentence and there was no clean way to survive it either. They had a house full of children who still needed breakfast the next morning. So they kept going, because that is the only option a parent actually gets. Now here is what he did next. The Alexanders homeschool. All of them. Bible study, classes, the entire thing run out of their home in Northern Virginia. Which creates a problem most families never have to think about. When your kid is homeschooled and he wants to play football, there is no team. No district. No roster to try out for. Nothing. So Valerie made a suggestion. "My wife looked at me and was like, what if you just built your own homeschool co-op and football community and you just build your own school?" "And I was like, I'm interested." That is how Harvest Covenant got built in Purcellville, Virginia. Not a summer camp. Not a clinic with a famous name slapped on the banner. An actual school, with actual academics, and an actual football program for homeschooled kids who had no other option. The 2005 NFL MVP coaches the team. "We want to build a culture that was faith-first and strong families," he said. "Extraordinary faith, thriving families, individualized academics, and dynamic sports." He also said this, which tells you what he is really chasing: "I wanted this to be a disciple-making machine. Kids come in, we don't even care how you come in. But they're willing to learn the ways of the Lord and they're willing to be college-good at sports." Now the honest part. This is not a story that lands the same for everybody. The faith-first framing is going to read one way to some people and another way to others, and that is fine. And it is worth saying plainly that most families cannot build a school when their kid has nowhere to play. Alexander could, because he made NFL MVP money. All true. But here is what is also true. He retired at 31 with a Ring of Honor career already banked. He could have coasted for the next 40 years and nobody would have said a word about it. Instead he buried a daughter at 70 days old, held a family of that size together on the other side of it, and then went and built the thing his kids needed because nobody else was ever going to build it for them.
