For basic survival, AI alignment will either be the final problem that we'll ever need to address, or the final problem that we failed to address. – at Lincoln, NE
Just saw Coyote vs. Acme. It’s good
Best of all, they didn’t just cash in on the Looney Tunes characters, they actually advanced their personalities a little, especially the Coyote. He seems like even more of a unique personality than before.
I think there's more movies in him. – at Cheney, NE
Everyone on my US Cellular family plan just had a message pop up, blocking almost all functionality until you agreed to restart RIGHT NOW. With no advance warning, it felt like a phishing attempt.
Turns out T-Mobile bought US Cellular, so it's all OK, but IMO we needed warnings.

ALT Pop-up message from T-Mobile on US Cellular phones, requiring an immediate restart of the phone. Almost all phone functionality was blocked until the user hit the "Restart" button. You couldn't even look on the web to see if the message was legit, because unlike most pop-up messages, this popup blocked normal attempts to switch apps. There is a video in the background. I had a video running when the popup appeared, and couldn't pause the video because the popup took over most device inputs. This made things even more confusing because the video kept talking and making noise as I tried to look up what was happening.
I propose a new standard test image for AI research. When making a video from a still image, use the public domain photograph of Einstein sticking out his tongue.

Grok 2 is doing a great job of understanding humor, puns, and made-up words. During our chat about Gray code (a non-standard way to calculate with binary numbers), I used the word "grayvolution" to advocate a gray-code revolution. Grok understood the joke and even one-upped it.
#AISnowWhiteChallenge: Release an AI-generated Snow White at the same time as Disney's March remake, and compete well at the box office. Doing it so quickly would define a new era in film, as did Disney's original.
Any takers? @xai @OpenAI @midjourney @runwayml @AIatMeta @google – at Lincoln, NE
The remake trailer appears to be the most disliked video in YouTube history, so competing well against the remake might be as simple as just showing up with something reasonable.
Imagine the free publicity for your AI movie system if you manage to actually win at the box office.

I just got access to Grok 2.0, and asked it to have a chat with the latest incarnation of ChatGPT-4o. Here are the results:

TLDR: Grok wants to make a "blockbuster buddy movie". ChatGPT agrees, and wants to play the straight man.

Fifteen years on this platform. I joined because game devs and entrepreneurs were here, and that tied in nicely to my long-term interest in AI and nanotech.
I'm staying cuz the AI devs are here, and AI isn't a long-term subject anymore. Nanotech still lags tho.

Sad news: John Walker, best known as the founder of Autodesk, has died. We followed each other on X, and I've long hoped to chat with him more often... "someday"...
Details are on Scanalyst, a site he founded which was inspired by a science fiction book:

Does anybody remember seeing the brown dust cloud that drifted north toward Port Isabel from the launch site? We need to estimate it’s altitude. Cloud height is hard to judge, but…

Layoffs do NOT have to be a surprise lock-out.
I was laid off last week, but @Matmacorp agreed to let me stay a few weeks to work on HIPAA forms. I'd probably make *more* money by moving on, but I'm the only one left trained in HIPAA.
Layoffs happen. Friends still help friends.
Fellow cloud architects: please read this thread about a security issue, and confess that the root cause is us, not the user who didn't know about features we added to "fix" the complexity.
Too many systems are needlessly complicated and over-punish small mistakes. That's on us.

I just uploaded this to the arxiv. “The Damage to Lunar Orbiting Spacecraft Caused by the Ejecta of Lunar Landers.”
tl;dr — The risk of damage to orbiting spacecraft is serious in LLO, not so bad in NRHO. We need to be proactive to manage it.

Interested in Starship stage-zero damage? Here's an important thread by one of the few people in the world who can be called an expert in how rocket plumes can damage launch/landing areas.
