#AllThatJazz Once again enamoured with Possible Utopias For Jazz Quintet, quite possibly my favourite 'jazz' release of the year. Considering that crowded field, it's no mean feat. These seven tracks cover so much ground with Pike's percussive masterstrokes almost always front and centre atop a dazzling array of soundscapes.

FT: In Brazil, "almost 2mn people, mostly men, now work full-time for transport or delivery apps — around 2 per cent of the workforce — with driver numbers climbing 37 per cent in three years, according to government research. The most common reason people work for the apps is that they could not find another job." The FT notes that in Brazil, the transport and delivery app economy has become a kind of unemployment insurance scheme, although one with declining "benefits". The same is true in China. It is hard to get good data, but the best estimates are that 12% of China's working population works in the gig economy, of which 7% work in the transport and delivery app economy – i.e. three to four times the share in Brazil. ft.com/content/3868b320-2c24…

pro tip: every bit of anti-rent control “warehousing” propaganda you see is either 1. defending slumlording, 2. defending a landlord’s choice to overleverage themselves and freak out about debt service, 3. Both

Why are hotels so expensive? A new lawsuit alleges that travel website Expedia is rigging the entire market, exploiting its leverage over 80% of all online bookings to inflate hotel prices in every booking channel by 15-30%. It's an economy-wide price fixing scheme, not unlike what Amazon does to retail. /

just watched Naza. It was shocking. One of the most disturbing things I have ever seen. It makes sense why Netanyahu is freaking out. It’s a total deconstruction of how a genocide happens and a society can lose its sense of humanity.
PM Benjamin Netanyahu ordered Israel's military, Shin Bet and attorney general on Sunday to reveal the identities of soldiers and officers interviewed in the documentary "NAZA" and prosecute them for "serious information security offenses, criminal defamation and harm to Israel's diplomatic and security interests." In his letter, Netanyahu wrote that "there is concern that those involved in the defamatory film committed serious criminal offenses by exposing highly classified information and creating a breach in the information security of a highly sensitive intelligence unit." | @jonathanlis1 🔗Read more: haaretz.com/israel-news/isra…

Don't forget, Melenchon isn't asking a lot here. The structurally married bond and FX markets capable of coercively enforcing fiscal discipline on sovereign nations have been a global operation only since the 1970s. Before then, governments had a high degree of economic autonomy. But fixed exchange rates were abandoned, capital controls were dismantled and the bond and FX markets became globally synced in electronic trading systems. In the event of a government threatening nationalisation and public investment, international investors - big capital funds demanding privatisation - were able to short the nation's currency and simultaneously dump its bonds. The newly empowered global 'creditor class' began to act as an international regulatory body with the ability to punish offenders with higher interest rates and austerity demands. For half a century it's been a bit like floundering and begging for mercy under the cosh of Wonga International teamed up with the Rialto coin traders serviced by the Inquisition and the local baillif. This global disciplinary system is a very recent innovation - with some political and central bank coordination it could be crushed as quickly as it was constructed.

41 states charge for what is known as cell rent. And even if you parole out early states like Florida will make you pay the TOTALITY per day of your original stay. One Black woman was billed $127,000 ($50 a day for 2,555 days) for the full seven years of her sentence despite only staying 10 months
A prison charging for rent and utilities is insane

Strong nation-states can take a lot of punishment. How much they take is a function of state cohesion, of elite-mass relations, and the degree of buy-in of the masses for the elite's projects. This is particularly true where the original source of the instability is an elite imperial project, as it is in this case. If one believes Greg Gause's picture of Saudi ultra-stability, then the Houthi campaign should stiffen Saudi resolve. If, on the other hand, one believes @AWCrooke picture of the breakdown of relations between the House of Saud and the Bedouin tribes, then the Houthi campaign could seriously destabilize the regime. One signal we should be watching is an uprising within Saudi Arabia. If that happens, things could go south very quickly. MBS seems to have really broken the old accord. Is a regime crisis brewing?
