🌿 Motion 107, passed at the @IUCN World Conservation Congress, calls for scaling up Indigenous leadership in protecting #biodiversity and the sacred.
📣 Motion 107 Passed: Scaling-up Indigenous leadership in the protection of biodiversity and the sacred! 🌿 Sacred sites and species are vital to #biodiversity, not just symbolic. Indigenous Peoples must lead #conservation on their lands, with full access to sacred places.
📣 Motion 097 Passed: Mainstreaming mentorship for young ecological stewards to enhance #conservation efforts! 🌍 This motion matters. Mentorship helps young professionals gain skills, networks, and real-world experience—things formal education alone can’t offer. @IUCN
Shockingly, many national governments around the world do not recognize their Indigenous populations as Indigenous.
In these instances, Indigenous rights are only extended through the terminology of ‘local communities.’
@IUCN #IUCNCongress #AbuDhabi2025
This is why the terminology of ‘Indigenous Peoples and local communities’ is necessary even when it is conceptually distinct.
@IUCN, what would you do to support correct terminology?
