A new study published this week in @JAppliedEcology by NYC Audubon and research partners shows that weather forecasts and bird migration intensity data can be used to predict which nights pose the greatest collision risks for birds in urban areas. nycaudubon.org/blog/study-sh…

Weather forecasts can help us save migratory birds from collisions with city buildings🐦
Uses 5 years of bird collision counts in NYC to determine influence of nocturnal weather conditions & bird migration traffic rates on collisions with buildings

This work will help @NYCAudubon and other bird conservation organizations better target messaging around the minimum buildings can do to reduce light pollution when birds are at high risk.
This is all part of a process to make our cities and homes more bird safe- which will largely come down to using more bird safe materials in the long term nycaudubon.org/our-work/cons…

Collisions with windows kill hundreds of millions of birds each year in North America- our new research shows that combining migration and weather forecasts can help identify the most dangerous nights for #birds in #NYC

We suspected that local weather could play a role in creating more dangerous conditions for birds. (Photo: Sara Kross)
We know that turning the #LightsOut in buildings can reduce collisions, but getting building owners and occupants to sustain this over a full migration season is a barrier. We also knew that even during peak migration, some nights are more dangerous to birds than others
We used 5 years of data collected by @NYCAudubon volunteers as part of #ProjectSafeFlight to understand if weather conditions would help to better predict times that are higher risk for migrating birds (Photo: Katherine Chen)
I wrote a blog post with lead author Katherine Chen of @NYCAudubon about the work, which she completed as part of her masters research @Columbia

Oh man… I have to follow @Matt_HerringOz’s awesome talk about water sparing and sharing in agroecosystems @AOC2023BRISBANE
We’re wrapping up the #ucnzabc for 2023. It is SUCH an incredible event because of the brilliant student talks- supported by our amazing staff and this team of dedicated students @UCNZbiology
