I still think often about those American heroes who stormed the cockpit on Flight 93. They had full knowledge of what had already occurred and correctly surmised that their plane was headed for a major target in Washington, D.C. They fought their way forward against all odds and attempted to force the barricaded cockpit. From the fragmented communications and cockpit recordings, we know they breached the door and fought hand-to-hand with the terrorists for control of the aircraft. Their selfless sacrifice saved countless lives on the ground that day and prevented an already horrific tragedy from growing even darker. The potential destruction of either the White House or the U.S. Capitol was prevented by a final stand that will forever be remembered in American history as one of the bravest acts ever undertaken by a group of ordinary citizens.
