Yes, Champagnie has 12 and 11 rebounds in the previous two games. But you don’t just bet because of that. You have to ask the most critical question: Why? - In the first two games without Wemby, Champagnie was averaging just 3.5 REB Chances a game. But something big happened in that 2nd game. - Against Memphis without Castle and Wemby, the Spurs got out rebounded 59-38 but STILL won the game. Coach Mitch Johnson saw they got bailed by poor shooting by the Grizzlies and set up a new game plan for rebounding. - Champagnie now is the primary weakside rebounder in the starting lineup. Kornet focuses on boxing out the big at all times, then barely attempts to chase down the rebound. That’s for Champagnie to do. Then, when a small five is on the court, Kornet goes off the floor, and Champagnie becomes the CENTER for the Spurs, having Olynyk play the four. - But the best part comes on free throws. Barnes and Kornet box out on each side, then Champagnie comes down the middle to get the FT rebound EVERY TIME! This season, Champagnie is getting 42% of FT misses, which is the BEST percentage by a wing player in the NBA - Against Denver, Kornet will be boxing out Jokic on every missed shot. With Gordon and Braun gone, Peyton Watson is the only key rotational player who gets above-average offensive rebounds. But with him becoming a scoring threat, his aggressiveness on the offensive glass has plummeted in the last two games. - Since the Spurs switched to the “Champagnie #1 Rebounder Method”, they’ve out rebounded opponents in 3/3 games. Champagnie is averaging nearly 15 rebound chances a game and has back-to-back double-doubles. His REB line has been 4.5 in 5 straight games now. We have to take advantage of Vegas sleeping.
