US has an electricity generation shortage. As climate gets hotter and more data centers come on line, demand will push prices higher, much higher, forcing people to limit their use of it.
US electricity prices are skyrocketing.
The average price of US residential electricity has risen +11% since January 2025, to 19.6 cents per kilowatt-hour in August 2026, near an all-time high.
Average prices during the first 8 months of 2026 were +40% higher than in the same period of 2019.
The largest increase in residential electricity prices over this period was in Maine, at +90%, followed by California and New York, at nearly +70%.
This comes as the AI boom is intensifying electricity demand, with data centers requiring enormous amounts of electricity to power thousands of chips and cooling systems.
A 1-gigawatt data center can consume as much electricity as 800,000 homes.
As a result, wholesale electricity prices in areas near significant data center activity surged by as much as +267% between 2020 and 2025.
The AI revolution is driving a surge in electricity demand, and households are increasingly feeling the cost.

Oil markets appear to be calling "bullsh*t" on both the Administration's "We control the Strait" narrative and its "Prices will be coming down after US midterms" narrative.
Oil traders are increasingly pricing the battle over the Strait of Hormuz as the new normal. Futures contracts for brent crude in December 2027 are now close to $90 a barrel, the highest ever and a sharp departure from even a month ago.

The 10-year rate rose nearly 6 bps today and rebounded off the 38.2% retracement level noted over the weekend. The big day to watch is Friday, when the S&P Global PMI Flash reading is released. This was the same report that sent rates higher back in September.

It's taken a while, but we are finally starting to see the CDX High Yield index move up and keep pace with the CDS of some investment-grade names that already moved higher. It is something to watch, because I expect equity implied volatility to rise as CDS widen further, and the S&P 500 PE multiple to contract.
