Robert, you joined the Conservative Party in 1997 and remained there until January 2026, approximately 29 years. You were a Conservative MP for more than 11½ years and spent nearly five years as a minister, including at the Treasury. During the Conservatives’ 14 years in government, the IFS records 15 new taxes or levies, alongside frozen personal tax thresholds, VAT rising from 17.5% to 20%, corporation tax rising from 19% to 25%, National Insurance increases, a frozen inheritance tax threshold and insurance premium tax more than doubling. The Parliament beginning in 2019 was the biggest tax-raising Parliament in modern British history. There were tax cuts too, and every proposal should be judged on its merits. However, accusing others of “reaching for other people’s money” while presenting yourself as detached from that record requires a remarkable degree of political amnesia.
