NWS Charleston is deeply saddened by the passing of Jared Smith, founder of @chswx. Jared was a tremendous supporter/partner of the NWS and an important member of the Charleston Tri-County community. We send our deepest condolences to Jared's loyal followers, friends, and family.
I’m struggling a lot tonight. I’m so mad at the world right now. I want to go to sleep to escape these feelings but then I wake up and have to relive the nightmare and realization that my life is forever changed.
If anyone has any stories about Jared - funny or weather related - please share them with me. Many have already and they bring me a lot of comfort.
I told myself a long time ago that I would keep my acct locked. But if I see one iota of a negative comment about my husband and love of my life, @jaredwsmith, I will be following up with someone and they will see it. He was the kindest soul and fucking deserves to still be here.

This one hurts. A dear friend in life and an excellent colleague in our weather industry Jared Smith (@chswx Charleston Weather) unexpectedly passed away yesterday due to extended complications from his heart surgery last Thursday. It was a planned surgery that was to help avoid further complications and get him where he needed to be, but it turned for the worst and many of us are surprisingly upset and very sad. Just contacted him last Wed night before the surgery and he was very positive and optimistic going into it - even said he wanted to have another get-together after the whole thing was over. Made sure to give him some positive words and wish him well. Glad I did - because I didn't know it would be the last conversation I would have with him. 😥
Jared was a one-of-a-kind person who was both genuine and generous with his time. If you knew him, he was extremely talented in all areas of his careers. I met and worked with him on the @CarolinaWxGroup for many years and we kept in good touch for all things weather here locally. Jared had just gotten married to his wife Lily Wald and was very happy. There are a lot of sad folks today wondering how and why with the complications, but let's focus on the person he was and celebrate his time with us - he touched a lot of lives with his personality and his incredible ability to share his knowledge. Truly a light that shone brightly - gone too soon. Keep him, his family and loved ones in your thoughts and say a prayer for their well being through this hard time.
Take care and hug your peeps today - make those calls you've been meaning to make that time has washed over. It's worth it.
Pics below include his wife Lily and at a College of Charleston meteorology event with Dr. Marshall Shepherd, TV Personality, Professor, Author as speaker and Meteorologist Trevor Gibbs, who among the first graduates of the CofC meteorology program. Jared was super stoked to be there as you can see. Great memory!
He touched so many lives and was the kindest and most humble person. It’s still so unfair that he’s gone.

Jared was a Padres fan, so it was always fuck the dodgers in this household. I would like to think he would’ve enjoyed watching them get swept by the Brewers.
I’ll be honest, idk how to go on right now. Losing my parents hurt, but this is pain I’ve never experienced before.
Fuck this dude. He’s automated his posts you shriveled nutsack.
Not the news I wanted to share, but @jaredwsmith, my best friend and husband passed this afternoon after suffering complications from surgery. I want y’all to know I’ve seen all your messages, I just haven’t had the energy to reply. Thank you all for caring. ❤️🩹
I can’t sleep because I’m so angry and sad and confused. My sweet husband is fighting to live in the ICU and I’m helpless.
I’ve been MIA. Jared had to have an aortic aneurysm repair and had some complications. He’s currently stable and in the CVICU and sedated. He’s still very sick but sounds like he’s trending in the right direction.

I love baseball, but I can’t wait for the lockout.
Y’all thought steroids was bad for baseball, but what the Dodgers did to the MLB is a bigger mockery of the game and the league.

Part of my issue with the Dodgers is that they act like they're some scrappy team who just keeps fighting, not a bunch of highly paid free agents who run from the grind to go chase a ring. You can't have it both ways
