Reading through this, I’m realising just how brutal a career in research can be, especially for us Medics who get into it without fully understanding what it entails.
First, you’re often considered an Early Career Researcher only after completing a PhD. In some contexts, though, the term is used more loosely.
Second, locally, we don’t have established MD-PhD pathways. This means that, for now, building a meaningful career in clinical research often requires you to figure out the pathway from scratch.
Third, we miss out on many of the fundamentals that would motivate us to consider research as a career path during our undergraduate studies.
I could go on and on.
But if we’re to establish clinical research as a career path, rather than a side project you occasionally plug into, we need to have more honest discussions about what it takes to get there.

We’ve just made public 125,091 DICOM radiology images from across my cancer journey (link below). The data is both longitudinal and multi-modal, dated and linked to my treatment timeline, so you can compare imaging across initial diagnosis, standard of care, first remission, “founder mode cancer care”, and second remission. It’s viewable in OHIF, the standard open-source viewer used in radiology research.
Given the long history of applying deep learning to radiology, we’re hoping to see a variety of methods and models applied to my data. If you find something interesting, please reach out to [email protected], or if you know a researcher who should see this, tag them below.
Thanks to Terra LaFerriere for organizing these images, and Kamil Slowikowski for building osteosarc.com into the resource it is.

Took me as a foreigner a few months - talking to Kenyans on ground, seeing extrajudicial killings and abductions - to learn you are a killer who lies and oppresses his citizens. Your “plan” is mostly broken promises, or more betrayed Kenyans. Gtfoh w those photo ops & lies.

Kenya is a very interesting country. Is it that when we set up govt parastatals, we have no idea what their role is intended to be?
Now, the #NationalCancerInstitute (NCI) is asking oncology health facilities to get certification from them to be able to get onto the SHA panel of providers.
Considering that this ia a regulatory function, currently under the jurisdiction of KMPDC, I am hard pressed to comprehend what NCI is saying.
The NCI is established under the Cancer Prevention and Control Act. It is an advisory body whose main role is to encourage better cancer management strategies, and to keep the National Cancer Registry. Where, pray tell, does it get the authority to make such demands? Health facilities are groaning under a million expensive certifications they must meet in order to get licensed by SHA. No nope, can't be adding some more in there that are already catered for by other entities. – at Nairobi, Kenya
