Let's talk about #Coretime. @kusamanetwork, a blockchain similar to @Polkadot, has recently implemented their #Coretime upgrade, which allows users to purchase high-quality block space either by the block or in bulk. The upgrade, still in the initial phase, has resulted in impressive outcomes for Kusama! The first three bulk Coretime offerings there sold out extremely quickly, highlighting the strong demand this technology brings. Furthermore, all $KSM tokens used to buy Coretime were burned, a practice that will also apply to $DOT tokens used for Coretime purchases on Polkadot. This upgrade is close to happening on Polkadot too, and it will be exciting to see how it develops in their ecosystem. If you want to learn more about Coretime on @Polkadot, take a look at the quote below👇
In my last thread, I talked about Polkadot 2.0 and the main changes it will bring. Today, we will deep dive into one of the upgrades that will be part of Polkadot 2.0's upgrade: Agile Coretime. Before we start, we need to understand the current way parachains interact within the @Polkadot ecosystem. The Polkadot Ubiquitous Computer is a framework integral to the Polkadot network, designed to enhance interoperability, scalability, and the efficiency of blockchain operations. It's structured into specialized spaces that collectively facilitate the interaction of parachains within Polkadot. These spaces include: • Application Space for hosting parachains. • Accord Space for enabling secure cross-chain communication through immutable treaties. • Core Space-Time for actual blockchain computation and validation processes. • Coretime, which serves as a novel resource allocation system using DOT tokens. See the core architecture of the Ubiquitous Computer here 👇 This comprehensive setup allows for diverse blockchain apps to coexist, interact, and scale efficiently, making Polkadot a versatile platform for developing and deploying DApps across various sectors! Where the Problem Lies 🤔 The current problem with the Polkadot Ubiquitous Computer lies in its core allocation system, particularly the fixed allocation of cores to parachains for periods of 6–24 months. This system, limited to 48 active cores, has proven inefficient in adapting to the different demands of apps within the network. The fixed block production rate of 12 seconds leads to financial incentives for producing blocks during peak periods and results in the creation of empty blocks during times of low traffic. Consequently, this rigidity in core allocation has led to significant issues with wasted and underutilized core time, highlighting the need for a more dynamic and efficient approach to resource distribution within the Polkadot ecosystem. The solution? Agile Coretime. Let's understand it: Agile Coretime is an evolved resource allocation model introduced by Polkadot to enhance the network's scalability and interoperability. It marks a significant shift from the fixed, one-core-per-parachain approach that characterized the early stages of the Polkadot Ubiquitous Computer, which led to rigid and sometimes inefficient use of computational resources! How Agile Coretime Differs from the Ubiquitous Computer 🔄 The primary distinction between Agile Coretime and the traditional Ubiquitous Computer model lies in the dynamic allocation and utilization of computational cores. While the Ubiquitous Computer allocated fixed cores to parachains for set periods, leading to potential underutilization and inefficiency, Agile Coretime views all cores as a shared pool of resources. This pool is dynamically allocated based on real-time demand and application needs, ensuring a more efficient use of network resources. How Agile Coretime Works: Agile Coretime operates on two main formats of core time allocation: • Bulk Coretime, which allows apps to rent core time in advance, providing a way for projects to secure computational resources for their operations over a predetermined period. This format is ideal for apps with predictable computational needs. • Instantaneous Coretime, which offers core time on a spot market basis, catering to real-time demand and allowing apps to purchase additional resources as needed instantly. This flexibility is crucial because, in case an app experiences unexpected spikes in usage, it can immediately get more resources. Both are sold through a specialized "Coretime chain" and the relay chain, respectively. Coretime as NFTs: An innovative aspect of Agile Coretime is the commodification of core time into NFTs. This approach allows unused Coretime to be traded, sold, or transferred between apps or parachains. Imagine how the utilization of resources will be much more efficient and market-driven within Polkadot. It also opens new avenues for economic activity and liquidity within Polkadot, as projects can monetize excess resources or acquire additional Coretime from the market as their needs evolve. Significance and Impact: The introduction of Agile Coretime addresses several critical challenges faced by the Polkadot network, including resource inefficiency and the inability to adapt to fluctuating demands dynamically. By allowing for the flexible allocation and trading of computational resources, Agile Coretime promises to: ✦ Enhance network efficiency by reducing idle or underutilized resources. ✦ Improve scalability with the dynamically allocated resources. ✦ Foster innovation by lowering barriers for new projects to access computational resources. Concluding, Agile Coretime is the evolution of the Polkadot network's approach to resource allocation and computational efficiency. Moving away from the fixed core allocations to a more dynamic, market-driven model, will make Polkadot more adaptable, efficient, and attractive to a broader range of projects and developers, ultimately facilitating the growth and diversity of its ecosystem!
