💡 Innovative research coming out of our Shoulder Biomechanics and Rehabilitation Lab led by Rebekah Lawrence! Read more about PhD in Movement Science candidate, Stacey Chen's article and study below:
High radiation exposure has long been a barrier to safely studying shoulder joint motion in detail. Researchers explored whether model-based tracking of shoulder kinematics – essential for understanding joint movement – can still deliver precise results using low-dose CT scans. They tested five CT protocols on cadavers and compared the motion tracking accuracy to a benchmark reference. The results: 🔹 CT dose was reduced by up to 93% 🔹 Errors in joint movement tracking remained minimal (≤0.3°, ≤0.1 mm) 🔹 Accurate tracking was preserved across all major shoulder segments: humerus, scapula, and clavicle These findings demonstrate that shoulder kinematics can be accurately measured with significantly reduced CT radiation, improving safety without compromising data quality.
