BYU FOOTBALL PLAYER CHARGED: BYU football player Matthew Ephraim Luapo Asiata has been charged following a July traffic stop in Provo that led to allegations of DUI and several other offenses. According to charging documents, a Utah County deputy stopped Asiata after allegedly seeing him drive into a bike lane and block a sidewalk while entering traffic. Investigators say they smelled alcohol coming from the vehicle and observed signs of impairment. Court documents allege officers found an open container of alcohol in the driver's door, and Asiata later admitted using a fake California driver's license to purchase alcohol while underage. Prosecutors have charged Asiata with: DUI, first offense Using false identification to purchase alcohol Minor in possession/consumption of alcohol Open container in a vehicle Providing false information to a peace officer Driving without ever obtaining a driver's license A lane travel violation Charging documents also state Asiata refused a chemical test at the jail before investigators obtained a warrant for blood and urine samples. A preliminary urine test was positive for alcohol and THC, while blood test results were still pending. Asiata's name may be familiar to many Utahns. In 2022, he survived a shooting outside Hunter High School that killed two other teenagers. At the time, his family described him as "a miracle" after he recovered from critical injuries.
