0 votes • Final resultsNagoro is a tiny village tucked away in the mountains of Tokushima Prefecture, on Japan’s island of Shikoku 🇯🇵, deep in the peaceful Iya Valley.
What makes this village so unusual is its hundreds of life sized dolls and scarecrows 🎎 scattered throughout the area. You can find them sitting at bus stops, working in the fields, standing outside houses, gathering in classrooms and even going about everyday activities around the village.
Nagoro once had hundreds of residents, but over the years its population declined as people moved away or passed away. A local woman named 'Tsukimi Ayano' returned to the village and began creating these incredibly lifelike dolls. Some were made to resemble people who had once lived there, while others represent ordinary villagers going about their daily lives.
Today, there are only around 30 actual human residents, meaning the dolls greatly outnumber the people.
Walking through Nagoro can feel fascinating and slightly eerie at the same time 👻. During the day, the dolls almost seem like real people frozen in time, quietly bringing the empty village back to life. But there is also something bittersweet about seeing so many figures in a place that has lost so many of its residents.
Nagoro is more than just a creepy doll village. It is a touching reminder of the people who once called this place home and a reflection of the changing lives of rural communities in Japan. 🤍
