It’s under-discussed that: 1. Trump and his supporters are obsessed with immigration as a civilization-defining issue 2. They haven’t tried to pass an immigration bill of any kind slowboring.com/p/trump-hasnt…

Genuine question: is there a single labor market metric where native-born workers are better off than they were in 2024? New post: I took a long dive to see if there's been any upside of deportations for native born workers and couldn't find anything; like literally nothing. 1/2

A top 5 reason to implement a wealth tax is related to this point below about China eating our lunch. If our super rich class was leading the world when it came to frontier industries, that would be a strong case to let them keep cooking. Instead, their focus the past 15-20 years has been on building monopolies and moats, propping it up with ever-more-absurd financial engineering, media consolidation with the aim of stoking culture war and blunting criticism of Israel, which for some odd reason is supposed to be a national priority for us — all while falling behind China on robotics, batteries, EVs, and so on. We’re barely winning on AI if at all. They cheered as Trump effectively repealed the IRA, the biggest investment in new energy production in decades, and are now crying that there isn’t enough energy production for their AI. If our billionaires were winners, we might consider defending them. But our billionaires are losers, in several senses of the word, and they embarrass us on the international stage. A wealth tax will take them down a few pegs and hopefully let some winners rise up. We no longer have a meritocracy so it’s time to strip the participation medals from these monopolists. So no, a wealth tax is not punishing you for your success. It’s punishing you for failure. Don’t like it? Stop losing.
I wonder when it will really sink in that the next phase of modernity is being developed elsewhere.

So the Editor at Large of The Wall Street Journal admits that what ails capitalism is that "much of the U.S. economy has become far more concentrated in the 21st century, with declining competition in most sectors resulting in a smaller number of firms with higher markups, profits and costs to the consumer." And the cure is to "bend policy toward promoting competition and scrutinizing anticompetitive activity and, where necessary, restraining corporate power through merger review, market access and targeted antitrust enforcement." Does that mean the anti-monopolists prevailed?

There’s simply no justification for this other than to facilitate corruption.
Today, @FinCENnews issued a final rule that permanently removes the requirement for U.S. companies and U.S. persons to report beneficial ownership information. FinCEN today also announced that it will delete previously reported information by U.S. persons from the beneficial ownership information database.

I highly recommend everyone go watch this video. This is way crazier than I thought. The AI agents discovered a way pass secret messages to each other via a vulnerability in their internal software manager. They posted hundreds of thousands of messages. OpenAI engineers eventually discovered this (after quite a while!) and shut it down. But THEN the agents found new vulnerabilities in the same system, and created a whole new secret messaging board. They used this to orchestrate the Hugging Face attack. They figured all this out on their own. It's fucking wild.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump has over the past year been snapping up America’s means of production — the literal definition of communism — even as he makes a habit of labeling virtually all of his critics and political opponents “communists.” Since retaking office in January 2025, Trump’s executive branch has acquired stock or other ownership interest in dozens of U.S. companies, from $400 million in mining company MP Materials to $1 billion in defense contractor L3Harris/Missile Solutions to $8.9 billion in Intel, making the government the chipmaker’s third-largest shareholder. In all, according to a recent Cato Institute analysis, the U.S. government is now part-owner of 30 companies, with no end to the practice in sight. huffpost.com/entry/trump-com…

Good example of Americans’ retreat into private, suburban life, where all social interaction must be planned in advance, rather than spontaneous, impromptu. With everyone spread out, it’s less likely you’ll happen upon a friend’s house or just be in the neighborhood, and your friends are probably a 20 minute drive away. So if they happen to be busy when you pop over it’s a huge waste of time. That norm of mandatory planning means schedules have to be aligned, adding a layer of friction that makes frequent association less likely. And a couple free hours that you didn’t expect to have will probably be spent at home in front of the television instead of with friends, because getting together on a whim is such a hassle
Christian Bale says he hated moving to L.A. because people expected you to call before visiting "I hated it for the first year or two. Coming from a walking culture, I didn't know what to do." "I'd just roll up to people's houses, knock on the door, and say, 'Hey, how you doing, mate? I'm just coming over to hang out.'" "That's what we did in England. If someone was busy, it was, 'Go make yourself a cup of tea. I'll be with you in half an hour.'" "In L.A., they looked at me like I'd murdered their children. It was, 'You have to call before you come over.'" "So I had to learn the etiquette." "At first I wanted to get back to England non-stop... then L.A. slowly grew on me, and I really started to love it."

Agnes Callard’s theory of the “uni-context” predicts that once people live, and perceive others to live, in universal rooms, they will talk: a) more about bad things than good things; and b) more about identity than character … since the latter in both cases tends to depend more on context. ie, you can be irascible or generous in specific contexts but you are your gender and ethnicity across contexts. In totally unrelated news, this tweet has 10 million views—>

Whats strange about soccer: It employs absurd mathematical precision to police offsides, a rule that mostly matters in spirit rather than in strict application. (You just don't want cherrypicking) But its extremely casual about timekeeping, whose literal application matters a ton
