Hi @jreynoldsMP, I’m an economist who's come round to rent controls! Here’s why 🧵: Markets only work well if: -buyers & sellers have roughly equal power -producers respond to price signals & expand supply in response to scarcity -buyers can walk away if prices get too high
.@AyoCaesar: "The one thing the govt could do to improve the lives of young people is introduce some rent controls" @jreynoldsMP: "No economist supports rent controls" There you have it. Are you a young person trapped paying exorbitant rent? The Labour govt says f**k you.

A story of missing millions... The privatised energy networks are routinely underinvesting on vital infrastructure. They underspent on what they requested from Ofgem in 11 of the last 12 rounds, going back to 2008. 🧵 What is going on? And why does it matter?

Who are the "Reform-curious" Labour voters? My take for the @FT on new research from @SteveAkehurst ... it's not going to be easy for Farage to hook them or for Starmer to woo them back on.ft.com/3GprOf2

A fire is blazing at a UK Power Network’s West London electricity substation, weeks after Heathrow was closed due to a similar blaze.   The UK’s electricity system is breaking down. Why?   Because of the behaviour of the private companies that run the grid.   🧵

Data from UK Steel indicates that UK wholesale electricity prices were over double those in Spain Spain has 40% wind and solar generation (higher than the UK) and a Net Zero target identical to the UK The UK has a Gas and market problem not a Renewables or Net Zero problem.

Spruce Pine is a small N Carolina town which provides most of the high purity quartz needed for advanced semiconductors. It's just been struck by Hurricane Helene. Status of quarries/processing plants unclear. As I wrote in Material World, this is a MASSIVELY important place👇

This is the moment Ratcliffe power station came off the electricity system for the final time, marking the end of 142 years of coal generating electricity in Great Britain!

A year ago I wrote a thread bemoaning the lack of cycle storage on my estate, having been told to clear bikes from hallways. Happy to say I'm now the proud owner of a key to the new cycle hangar installed just outside the block - thanks @hackneycouncil for making it happen
A small thread for catharsis if nothing else regarding owning a bike on a council estate. The other day some very formal notices were stuck on all bikes being stored in internal corridors on my estate (Nye Bevan in @hackneycouncil) announcing they all had to be removed.

They said we wouldn’t get anywhere. They put out graphs they knew were lies in order to confuse local people. They lied about me to mislead people. But in just 4 weeks we achieved the same vote as a political party that has been around for over 100 years. I’m so angry that the Labour Party has done this to Chingford & Woodford Green. They have returned Iain Duncan Smith to Westminster and should be ashamed. Labour’s candidate will now go back to Brent, while we have to deal with the consequences. You have given me so much support. I can’t express how grateful I am. We will fight on.
