Okay hear me out. Just like Tesla, starlink will fail in India mainly because of its expensive price. India is a very price sensitive market & Elon very well understands that.
Only reason he is adamant about its launch in India is to bypass government’s restrictions incase government of India wants to shut Internet down in some areas where there is a security threat.
With unrestricted access to internet he’ll project himself as a messiah of free speech & democracy provoking citizens to overthrow the ruling party thereby inducing a never ending cycle of chaos while deep state calling the shots in backdrop.
That’s the whole point. (If he hands over the final kill switch for starlink over India to the GOI, I don’t see any reason it’ll be not allowed)
Starlink is available in about 172 countries/territories per its Sep 2026 map data, so "over 165" holds.
It has engaged India since ~2021 (pre-sales, formal GMPCS application Nov 2022), secured the GMPCS licence (Jun 2025) and IN-SPACe authorisation (Jul 2025), built 20 local gateways, and tailored operations for Indian rules including data localisation. Executives confirm five years of work. Full commercial spectrum and security clearance remain pending.
India has issued GMPCS licences to Starlink, OneWeb and Jio; all three are at the same security-assessment stage before spectrum. The Ambani question is rhetorical with no supporting evidence of preferential treatment.
Starlink, along with Jio SES and Airtel OneWeb are already in last stages of approval by GoI. What both gentlemen are doing is inciting Indians first, and when news of technical approval comes (need not be functionally approved), call it as "Modi succumbed" to disillusion the base and give ammo to the opposition. Guess where both have MoUs with, and whom they always appreciate?

Last time Joe Biden admin blocked / delayed Elon’s Starship launches, Elon dived into the US presidential campaign in Pennsylvania and ensured Trump won.
He will now go after Modi govt in India and back Rahul.
Anything that blocks Elon, he works to remove it.

Starlink has been weaponized in the Ukraine war.
India shouldn’t allow it.
In case of a security threat in J&K where internet needs to be regulated , Starlink can potentially bypass any such restrictions.
India needs to control its data and internet with Indian players.

This is the White House going full on Modi after India refused to budge on Trade Deal. MEA & FM both cleared stance and now just like Bessent did on Russian Oil arbitrage last year, Elon is now naming Mukesh Ambani while fact is none of the players have so far got commercial license and security clearance.
Jio, One Web by Airtel and Starlink all are waiting in line. This sudden outburst of Elon against India is managed by White House. I would anyday trust Jio & Airtel over Starlink having my data and causing chaos just like it did in Iran & Ukraine in regime change ops. Americans are really pissed off with India.
