What if 19 million hectares of arable WA were mapped and moved from blanket rates to variable rate lime, gypsum and potash?
With the Ag industry under severe price pressure, it seems like the right time to do a business case.
We ran the numbers using typical WA farm application rates and current product prices

Results depend on soil. On acid soils, variable rate often increases average lime rates, and the value shifts from input savings to yield. Benchmarks are indicative; local quotes and strategic soil data decide the real number. #accurateagriculture
Our @Spectare_VRTS program facilitates this "pooling" simulation. We also can embed surface drains and tile drains and watch how they directly affect the water flow and pooling!
AI coding has definitely helped create these tools! @traviss22
Out here just casually pulling @JohnDeere ops center elevation data with API and running rain simulations to determine drainage and ditching paths.
AI developed software will be groundbreaking to those who aren’t afraid to push boundaries. #farmtech

Your rainfall .... variable
Your soils .... variable
Your yields .... variable
Your application rates .... blanket.
Yes it can be simpler, but does it make sense??

Attention Farmers/Growers:
Assuming no major catastrophic events before or during harvest, late season biomass on cereals (in particular) can predict yields with 75-85% accuracy.
Use this info wisely !

Pretty cool tech on display at @ASHEEPBEEF field day. Crops not bad either. Thanks for the opportunity to present #jfg #deeperisbetter

Our clients would lean to differ. They have been/are making decisions from the ground up, most for many years now.
They have been investing wisely in their soils with a systematic approach. Pushing their farming business in distinct directions while actively insulating from global and local market volatility. #jfg #deeperisbetter

A simple approach using DataFarming NDVI. Three maps of the same paddock from early June, July and August, using three management zones and a 100 m scale to keep things simple.
I used the 5 July image for variable rate urea, with the aim of supporting yield potential rather than evening up the paddock (note: the evening up approach can be taken if your confidence P, S, pH & sodicity are not highly variable). The supporting yield approach meant that blue areas received the highest nitrogen rate and red areas the lowest.
Before making the prescription, I did the basics, checked that weeds and soil type were not confounding the NDVI signal, then measured tiller numbers in each of the three target zones as a proxy for likely head density. Combined with assumptions around grains per head and grain weight, this helped estimate yield potential and nitrogen demand.
Paddock was sown to Rio wheat on 5 May. Great day to sow wheat 😉.

Our wind forecasting tool is good for planning the week of spraying. Colour scheme makes for easy reading.
Its a global model, so you can leverage anywhere... even Antartica.
