1950 East Pakistan: On 15th night Hindu villages were attacked, and houses were set on fire. The air was filled with “Allahu Akbar” and “kill all Hindus”. Two Hindus, Madan Nandi and his brother Lallu were killed. When the villages were attacked the women of the household were already removed elsewhere, only the two brothers were in the house. When the villagers complained to the police about the murder of these two brothers, the cops told them to burn the two corpses and tell others that they died from illness. The attitude of the cops put the villagers scared. Gradually, all the neighboring village of Ichil and Satani, etc, were attacked. Muladi was a port town and had shelters where many Hindus took refuge. The Muladi Hindu Massacre: Muladi is a significant river port. Here there are huge unimaginable killing of Hindus happened. In Muladi and around the village like Ishacali, Satani, etc, the scared Hindu gathered in Muladi, thinking it a big area and was safe. They were in relief camps. On February 17th 3000 to 4000 Muslims attacked the Hindus there. They carried on the killings in front of the police station. The throat of 100 year old Maheshchanda Pal, who did not wish to leave his native village and flee to India, was slit while he was sleeping. Sitanath Pal, a wealthy Hindu business, hid in a bush and from there he saw that all the women of his house being raped. Then the killing spree started on the streets. The Hindus ran to the police station. One Hindu, named, Narayan Bhaduri who had tuberculosis was dragged from his wife embrace and was killed and then they killed his wife. Yoshadhalal Kundu was slowly cut into pieces and then brought to the police station. The Hindu doctor Kumudbihari Banerjee, who healed many Muslims was killed in front many of the police station. Several Hindus, Barodakanta Pal, Gopal Pal, Sukhasundar Pal, Dhiren Pal, D Kaviraj, D.N. Roy, Madan Pal, Gopal Kundu were killed. Inside the police station, the cops (who were all Muslims)broke all the symbols of married women, like white conch shell bangles (sakha), erased their sindoor or vermilion, and forced them to read th e Kalima, and the women among themselves. According to Ms. Lila Roy, as reported in Jayasri, The situation worsened on December 15 when Hindus of the Gaunodi, Khalkathi, Nalhati subdivisions were brutalized, looted, fire set in and even the Hindus on the steamer who were on their ways to Dhaka were killed and thrown on the river. Not being able to bear this much torture, hundreds of Hindus fled to the safety of the Muladi police station. Instead of protecting them hundreds of Hindus were killed in the courtyard of the police station . One Hindu professor was burnt alive by his students and then they danced around his corpses. In Madanpasha village under Babugang police station a mob of 300 Muslims came in, took all the Hindus, made them stand in a row and beheaded them. Then in the Madhavpasha Zamindar house 200 houses were attacked, killed and 40 were severely injured. According one eyewitness, in Barishal district, about 1000 Hindus were killed and 2000 were missing. Researcher Subhashri Ghosh said that 2500 Hindus were murdered. According to documentary film maker Supriyo Sen, 650,000 Hindus fled from Barishal to India and on their way several were killed, women raped, abducted and families were looted. On February 15 and 23 February, the killing spree of Hindu continued in nearby village ---Lakutia, Sarsi, Madhavpasha, Rahamatpur, Rajpur and Mudali. The landlords of Madhavpasha had huge houses. On the 15th hundreds of Hindu villagers came and took refuge there. The landlords, Premlal Chaudhuri gave refuge to some Hindus; also Vaidyanath Chaudhuri and Prafullabala Chuadhurani (the lady of the house), gave some of the Hindus shelter. On 17th morning joint Magistrate Faruki, the SDO Nehaj, and several officers came with the ex-Magistrate of the district, Macainarni to survey the situation. In the morning of the 17th some 2000 Muslims with lethal weapons surrounded the landlord’s place and shouted, “Allahu Akbar” and flung abuses towards the Kafirs (Hindus). The Muslims broke the door and dragged out all the Hindu women. Their leader Shiraj Maulana told them to take the Hindus to the mosque where they will be judged as Kafirs (or unbelievers). The next day they were taken to the home of Sharif Ali Khondokar , the Headmaster of the local school, and was forced to read the Kalima and adopt Islam. Later those who were hiding in the home of Premlal Chaudhury were rescued and brought to Barisal town. Others who hid in Vaidyanath’s house were sought out and their throats were slit. Babies were taken from the lap of mothers and put on the end of spears and killed. All the women from ages 10 to 50 were dragged outside. While doing this, the Muslims were dancing to the music of the bells that they wore around their ankles. Hindus like Bipin Shil, Ramkumar Roy, Narayan Banik, Nayan Banik, Sukharanjan Roy, Adhir Roy, Sushanta Roy, Bhumohan Roy, Gopalkrishna Roy, Amritlal Roy, Govindo Saha, Krishna Saha, Yogesh Saha --- were called Hindu Kafirs and beheaded. It is estimated that about 300 Hindu corpse were lying heaped over one another. 17 February: About 3 in the afternoon 3/4000 Muslims shouted “Allahu Akbar” and attacked the Muladi port shelter and started looting. Sitanath Pal was a wealthy business man and he had a gun. The Muslims threatened him. Sitanath Pal took Rs 20000 and 80 Tola gold and tied them to his belly and with his gun in hand went to the police station. T was 3 n the afternoon. On his way to the police station a crowd shouting, “Allahu Akbar” confronted him and demanded they money and gold. He jumped into a nearby pond and hid under a water hyacinth. Seeing the Muslim crowd the other Hindus were scared and scattered and dispersed. The Muslims caught hold of the Hindus and started killing them indiscriminately. The police station was a stone’s throw away but no one came. Throughout the afternoon and evening looting, killing, and rape of Hindu women occurred. February 18, 1950: Next day on the 18th the entire place was deserted and corpses scattered everywhere. One 117- year old Hindu, Mr. Naresh Chandra Pal, who was widely respected in the village, and refused to leave East Pakistan and go to India, was killed in his sleep. There was wailing and moaning coming from every Hindu home in the village. Innumerable Hindus were dead and their corpses laid in the village, port, and roads. In the garden of one Banerjee, a Hindu gentleman, there were over 300 corpses. Hundreds of people took refuge in the police station requested shelter, the cops refused to given them shelter. Out of desperation, Hindus hid in the jungle, where the Muslims carried on attacks. One Muslim, called Goni Majhi threatened to kill a Hindu, Makhanlal Kundu’s wife and her uncle and took all the jewelry and money. On 18th February many were forced to return to their homes, where almost everything was looted. The Ansars (Islamic helpers) requested everyone to come to in the police station. But in the police station the Hindu men were killed and the women were distributed among the men in the police station. The cops ordered the people to be murdered inside the police station. One person, who was suffering from tuberculosis was forcefully taken from his wife’s lap and killed; then the Muslims killed his wife Yashodhabala was cut into pieces. One physician, who treated everyone in Muladi, was killed inside the police station. Hundred of corpses of Hindus were thrown into the river. Barodakanti Pal, Gopal Pal, Sukhsundari Pal, Dhiren Pal, Kaviraj D. N. Roy, Madan Pal, Gopal Kundu, Koyek Kundu, were all killed inside their village and in the port area.
