Printing a capacitive touch sensor (linear slider + circular control) for cars using Chimet thermoformable silver and dielectric pastes on ABS. The conductive layer formed the touch electrodes and traces; the dielectric layer insulated and reinforced them. A custom 3D-printed buck thermoformed the flat circuit into 3D shape. Connected to an Arduino, the sensor detected touch input and triggered LED feedback, confirming that conductivity survived forming. Video Credit: @voltera_io

Flexible sensors enable applications that rigid sensors cannot by delivering precise motion detection with high resistance to electromagnetic interference, direct curvature-based measurements without inertial drift, and two-dimensional deflection sensing for structural monitoring. The sensor shown was printed using NOVA, a direct ink writing dispensing system. Video Credit: @voltera_io #engineering #technology #printedelectronics

Flexible sensors are enabling applications that rigid sensors cannot by combining precision, adaptability, and durability. Their high signal-to-noise ratio and resistance to electromagnetic interference (EMI) support accurate gesture detection, while direct curvature-based measurements avoid the cumulative drift associated with inertial measurement units (IMUs), making them valuable for rehabilitation technologies. Their ability to detect deflection across two dimensions also makes them well suited for structural health monitoring and intrusion detection. The sensor featured in the video was printed using NOVA, a direct ink write dispensing system. Video Credit: @voltera_io #engineering #technology #printedelectronics

Did you know that the electronic devices you use every day rely on your body's conductivity to function? Your body is conductive. And that's important for capacitive touch sensors (the technology behind your phone screen and other devices). When your finger approaches the electrode of the sensor, the electrostatic field close to that touch point becomes distorted, and the position of your finger is measured based on that distortion. Watch a decimal counter being printed and assembled to demonstrate the fundamentals of digital logic, counting circuits, and seven-segment displays. The board counts from 00 to 99 using two seven-segment displays, with adjustable counting speed and a manual reset function. Incoming pulses are processed by 74LS93 counter ICs, converted into display signals by 74LS47 decoder ICs, and shown as numerical outputs on the displays. It's a practical example of how binary signals are translated into the numbers we see, making it a useful tool for learning the basics of digital electronics. One of the best ways to detect electrical signals from the body is to use stretchable sensors that can conform comfortably to body movements. Researchers at @YorkUniversity used NOVA to print electrodes on tattoo paper. Because the tattoo paper is quite thin, it can be easily integrated with medical devices like prosthetics. These flexible electrodes offer greater comfort, flexibility, and efficiency, as well as their personalized, non-invasive nature compared to traditional, metal-clasp electrodes.
