I also run second bechmark created by @forked_franz which is more reliable than original one. The numbers are still in favor of Java (and Kotlin) over Rust, but this is more about the quality of the port and optimizations that go beyond what most of us would do in a typical project. Before you switch languages because of performance, there is a lot you can do within your current stack. There is still room for improvement, but for now, I'm done. More numbers: github.com/kgonia/once-campf… @forked_franz benchmark: github.com/franz1981/campfir…
Java is also faster than Rust. I saw @axeng200's post and was curious about Java numbers. I asked Claude to do the migration, and even though the first version was faster, it was very far from idiomatic Java. I tried to close the gap, but some compromise had to be reached in order to make this work as a drop-in replacement. Also, some typical Java approaches were just slower. Probably both the Rust and Java implementations could probably do better in terms of performance and being closer to how idiomatic code is written by everyday developers Stack is Java + quarkus. Beside just Java migration I tested some new feature like AOT with training introduced in Java 28 (EA build). My main conclusion is - it's hard to beat a language that will adjust code to how your app is used. It's more about the JVM than Java. Repo: github.com/kgonia/once-campf…

An agent writes the code now. Do you still need an IDE? You do if you want to understand and verify what the agent did. 🎥 In our new video, we talk about the role of an IDE now that humans aren't the only ones working on the code. youtu.be/AHFGMkzrfwM

I really love this green/amber phosphor retro-futuristic UI aesthetic. EVA captured it especially well. We need to resurrect it.

My students know this: I have been waiting for this for many years: the #Dodo genome is almost completely assembled. This magnificient animal can be brought back by the same species that caused its extinction. #genomics rocks
JUST IN: Colossal Biosciences announces its dodo genome reconstruction is 95% complete, with plans to reintroduce the extinct bird to its native habitat in Mauritius.

@colossal is really doing it: they have completed 95% of the Raphus cucullatus genome. DE-EXTINCTION OF THE #DODO IS NOW POSSIBLE! colossal.com/dodo/
Breakthrough in dodo de-extinction. Bringing back the dodo is like rebuilding a lost hit from a few scratchy records. The tricky part? The arrangement, aka regulatory DNA. GenoMorph studies living birds to learn how it works. Swipe to learn more. (1/10)

This is a good example of why I’ll always pay for maintainable software instead of switching to an open‑source personal alternative, which I don’t think will be maintained at all. Most of these "personal software" projects feel like attention farming, not long‑term products. I’m not just paying for the app, I’m paying for the team I trust to fix bugs, maintain it, and keep improving the tool I work with every day.
I got tired of CleanShot, so I built my own Mac screenshot app. It's called Matte. More backgrounds, better customization, automatic hiding of sensitive info, and all the little features I personally wanted. We're entering the age of personal software.
