What a wonderful scene: a group of writers gathered among all those shelves, in a 400-year-old home, with a host who's 101. Sounds like a meeting you remember for years.

and here is Tino de Sa, who is a relative junior in our writing group, but also a very senior retired IAS officer and former Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh, with his impeccable sonnet in honour of our host and group founder-member. Viva!

What happens when you insult the Prime Minister? In India, a 15-year-old’s life has been upended after remarks at a Cockroach protest. In her first interview since the backlash, she speaks about the trauma and a nightmare that is far from over. theguardian.com/world/2026/o…

Warm congratulations to Navi Pillay, the first woman of Indian origin to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Her extraordinary life story belongs to the many-storied, often heroic history of Indian migration: oceans traversed , hardships endured, discrimination confronted and new homelands served with honesty and distinction. Her Indian inheritance and her South African experience meet in a life devoted to human dignity. Were Gandhiji alive, I believe he would have recognised something deeply familiar in that journey: the struggle against injustice in South Africa becoming a commitment to justice everywhere. We may not have agreed with all her judgments or positions. That should not diminish our respect for her courage, independence and achievements. She is as much a daughter of India as she is of South Africa. Our national pride should be accommodating enough to embrace her independent conscience.

#GoedemorgenNederland #WNL

I wish sensible people would realize that the most important thing --like in July 1914-- is to stop the slide towards a general war. Only once we do so, we can go back to trying to reinvent the international system, everything from inequality to climate change. But to believe we can do it in today's conditions with raging wars and with nobody trusting anybody is not only impossible but represents a waste of energy. Indeed, Intellectual energy is wasted on unrealizable tasks b/c the true origin of the problem is not recognized.
