It is so depressing that I still routinely hit paywalls when trying to read scientific papers. The scientific leadership of this country and the world have betrayed science and society with their perpetual cowardice on this, and so many other issues.

I give the same advice (for free, so take it or leave it) every time: read widely When you read a paper that makes you wish you’d written it, for whatever reason, write down the lab (and the first author if they’re a postdoc). With that list, ask around to filter Then reach out
How are y’all finding/found postdoctoral labs/opportunities???

This is cool as hell
Can Turing patterns be engineered in synthetic biological populations? Yes: A recent paper by @imperialcollege Mark Isalan shows how to obtain regular and tunable Turing structures in growing colonies using @synbio: biorxiv.org/content/biorxiv/… @vdlorenzo_CNB

Some of our very clever, amazing Biochemistry students took the lyrics to every @taylorswift13 song and adapted it to a Biochemical concept. Best end of the semester decorations ever! 1/2

We’ve been thinking about how to apply large language models to better understand and explore genes (e.g., genes of poor or unknown function) by looking at their context. This project, led by @Micro_Yunha , is summarized below. Enjoy!

Stunning yet terrifying images of microplastic pollution
Microplastics pollute every inshore plankton sample I collect. There are many new, modern wool fabrics with similar benefits to manmade materials. As your old plastic clothing wears out why not make a New Year's resolution to replace it with natural fibres. @zeiss_micro

In taking a public stand in support of Dr. Fauci and against misinformation and intimidation, @ASMicrobiology reinforces the essential role of science as the basis for responding to public health threats.
For decades, Dr. Anthony Fauci has led with science to fight infectious disease. His leadership during the pandemic saved countless lives, & his commitment to evidence-based science is a key reason why public policies have been able to protect public health. ASM stands w/ Fauci.
