“We must face the fact that we are on the brink of times when man may be able to magnify his intellectual and inventive capability, just as in the nineteenth century he used machines to magnify his physical capacity. Again, as then, our innocence is lost. And again, ..." 1/3
"... of course, the innocence, once lost, cannot be regained. The loss demands attention, not denial.” from Christopher Alexander's "Notes on the Synthesis of Form" (1962) 2/3
Everything old is new again. This quote from Alexander's published version of his dissertation about design as a system for expanding human intelligence could instead be from today, about artificial intelligence!

This is so incredibly hilarious. The story of how “this is how you lose the time war” became an Amazon bestseller

"This is a genius move. Now the open source community will fix the twitter algorithm for free instead of Elon having to pay developers"
The open source community:
Love this use case but I’d be too scared to be spoiled… we rarely watch the races live (esp if it’s in Europe) so my husband has a ban on all social media as soon as we wake up until we finish the race 😩
Clippy is about to get so powerful
As one of the most unsurprising moves in tech, @Microsoft has announced that they will incorporate all of @OpenAI tools into their products. In particular, this means a wide availability of ChatGPT in various Office products.

For the past six years, I've sent out my favorite books I read in the past year as a free holiday gift to friends & family! I'd totally recommend this tradition to anyone, it's delightful for everyone involved 📚🎁🎄

My impression of OpenAI about a year ago was that they had almost no women technologists. I asked which was more likely- reaching AGI or 50% women engineers. The person I spoke with said AGI.
Apologies that @EzraKlein interview happened mostly to mention men (partly because focus was on OpenAI).
here are 10 of the many great women in AI I follow:

An underrated way to attract great engineers to your company
(drumroll)
Have a great engineering blog.
This means ENGINEERS write the blog, not content writers. And they give the "real deal" about challenges, learnings, failures.
So few companies do this. A few that do:

I present to you, some images that Midjourney created from some scientific paper titles. I think maybe this should be required with every paper submission to a journal. Let's see some of your favorites!
Yes I miss traditional knobs in cars all the time! Even our 7-year old Prius had already done away with most physical knobs.
Also applies to smartphones. TouchID > FaceID for seamless unlock. I will die on this hill
“Traditional buttons, knobs, and switches have a tactility that allow drivers to intuitively find and adjust them while keeping their eyes on the road. A slippery touchscreen does not.”

I've been making decisions with my friends this way for a few years but I only recently discovered there's a name for it: "fist-to-five" 👊✋🧠
