"To have, or not to have- that is the question", like Hamlet faced the dilemma on minerals. Geological survey of Finland (GTK) and their A/Prof S. Michaux faced too, and answered: “World doesn’t have enough mineral reserves for the energy transition” What's that all about?🧵

Latest: Zelenskyy tells reporters over WhatsApp that restrictions on Ukraine's Starlink systems remain. Interceptor drones can't function, logistics and operations hobbled. The maximum speed is 161 kph; "exceeding this limit causes the Starlink connection to cut out completely, resulting in the loss of the drone." He says Ukraine has done tests to determine whether SpaceX is truly facing technical issues, as has been told Kyiv by the US side, or if this is a "deliberate operation... to restrict us, cut us off, and prevent us from defending ourselves and protecting our people, both at the front and among the civilian population." He says Ukraine "sent a couple of vehicles equipped with Starlink terminals into European Union territory." "They moved at speeds exceeding 180kph, and the Starlink systems worked perfectly. We have the relevant logs and evidence to prove this." He adds: "The conclusion is clear: the restrictions are in effect within Ukraine but do not apply within the European Union. In other words, this is a planned operation."

Enough of this endless ass-kissing, groveling, crawling on the knees, sickeningly sweet flattery, and cartoonish pandering to this uniquely severe case of narcissistic personality disorder. People like this only end up walking all over you and continuing to go completely insane at your expense. Nothing more.

Despite hype, reprocessing of mine tailings is generally unlikely to yield economic production of critical minerals. Shown here: global mine site sample data for antimony, gallium, lithium, and tin. Economic ranges in blue. It’s rare for a single report to put an end to a bad policy idea, but I’m hopeful this tour de force from my colleague @PeterCookBTI does just that. Policymakers should not misinterpret mine tailings as a meaningful solution for critical minerals security. 🧵

Suoremmin sanottuna vetytalouden kannattavuus laskettiin joko tahallisesti tai tahattomasti moninkertaisesti pieleen. hs.fi/paivanlehti/15102026/a…

❗️Last night, the operation of Starlink terminals in Ukraine was restricted. Connectivity began to drop when moving at speeds exceeding 160 km/h. As a result, a number of critical missions were disrupted. SpaceX likely took these measures at the request of the Trump administration. Also last night, when Kyiv was attacked by ballistic missiles, Ukraine did not receive intelligence regarding their launch— a failure that could have led to higher casualties. Ukraine did not attack Russian oil refineries, yet Trump has already begun imposing sanctions on my country. Meanwhile, sanctions against Russia have been eased.

Erittäin hyvä ajankohtaiskatsaus @fingrid_oyj:ltä sähkön riittävyydestä. Fingrid on tilanteen tasalla.

Getting outside your bubble can be a challenging task but with books you can do it in a comfortable setting. Having argued with @triofrancos about the extent and the harm caused by the energy transition and especially lithium mining, I'm glad to find that from technological perspective, there's a thorough background work that has gone into this book. The need to address the climate change through technology is understood although, the motivation and some of the offered solutions might be different. If you want to understand the different grass-root setting of both mining activism but also the officials directing the legislation work there are vivid accounts and interviews in this book. The point where I find myself most at odds are some of the scale factors. Proper studies such as USGS and Apple's rock-to-metal ratio are cited. It is said that world's 12 000 mines cover roughly 65 000 km2 of land according to satellite data but then comes the catch. That figure is multiplied with a 50 km radius because according to a cited study, that is a buffer zone in which mining directly or indirectly contribute to the deforestation in the tropical conditions: "If you incorporate the 50-kilometer buffer zone, mining has a global footprint of 24,5 million square kilometers." (p. 65) That's: - 2,5-times the Europe's total land area- 10 Mkm2 - more than half of the global Agriculture land- 48 Mkm2 - more than half of all the global forests- 40 Mkm2 - more than 20-times the global urban and built-up land area- 1 Mkm2 World's total area is 141 million km2. I understand the need to account the total environmental harm caused by mines and mineral extraction, the tailings and so on, but it's impossible to continue the argumentation based on this kind of scale-factor issue. As said, there are good parts about this book in relation to countries in question, the extraction history, and the qualitative worries among some of the local indigenous groups nearby these mines. My main focus was to understand the quantifying method behind undertanding the harm caused by energy transition and especially battery mineral mining. From that point of view, I'm afraid that I cannot recommend this book. On the other hand, If you want to understand the mindset of different people affected by mines, yes go for it.

More from my @FT interview with President Zelenskyy and on the intelligence intercepted by Kyiv about Russia's winter attack plans. It's deeply disturbing. Attacks concentrated on Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa and Lviv. The goal: isolate them, destroy morale, sow chaos, spark a new flood of refugees into the EU. Also: Russia wants to sever Ukraine's nuclear facilities from the energy grid. ft.com/content/c2ad4cd1-a08a…

This is a balanced article although quite brief in detail which is why I’m happy to say that my 500 page (AI-free) book about the battery value chains (in editing process) will build on top of these general but perhaps not as generally known findings.
Lithium-ion batteries are central to the automotive industry, power grids, data centres, drones for defence, robotics and more. Our new commentary traces their rise as a defining technology of the 21st century & key lessons learned in the process 👉 buff.ly/znXPcc3

The copper bull case is real. But it isn't the one you keep hearing. Forget the giant forecast deficits. Grades are falling. Discoveries have collapsed. New projects cost more and take longer to build. That's the real copper scarcity story. But what happens with copper at US$15,000/t? Read my Blog to find out! blog.rkequity.com/2026/10/01…

Imagine a market where electric heavy duty vehicles are already cheaper to operate than diesel trucks and where the RFNBO mandates will kick in further increasing the diesel price for the logistics companies in the next 5 to 10 years. Good luck with the RFNBO production projects. You'll need it. Findings by @transenv
