Corruption is no longer an exception in Malaysia - it has become embedded in the entire system. If corruption were to stop tomorrow, much of the country’s politics and civil service machinery would grind to a halt. Since Mahathir introduced “money politics” in the mid-1980s to secure UMNO delegate votes, the practice has spread throughout the political structure. At the highest levels, dirty money now lubricates the GLCs and civil service and keeps the government machinery running. Election after election, many continue to support the same figures with well-documented histories of misconduct and corruption.
