Fifty-five years ago today, Ayn Rand published The New Left: The Anti-Industrial Revolution. In essays on environmentalism, campus protests, progressive education, and irrational emotionalism, Rand examined the philosophical ideas animating the New Left. She challenged, in particular, the emerging ecology movement’s antagonism toward industry, business, and technological solutions—and human life more generally. Since the 1960s, environmentalism, specifically, has gained enormous cultural traction, but its underlying view of man’s relationship to nature has not fundamentally changed. Its moral condemnation of industrial progress remains deeply influential. That is why Rand’s analysis is as pertinent today as it was then. The book was later expanded and published under its current title, Return of the Primitive: The Anti-Industrial Revolution. Discover the expanded collection below👇
