As the weather gets nippy, I bring you what may be the most macabre dumpling-eating scene ever. A lovelorn youth seeks advice from a demon in Aleksandr Rou’s superlative adaptation of Nikolai Gogol’s ‘The Night Before Christmas’ (USSR, 1961).

Secret Rites, 1971. Directed by Derek Ford. 'Documentary' about the study of witchcraft and black magic. Monthly Film Bulletin said: "An unusually sympathetic and selective addition to the recent spate of witchcraft documentaries. After a spoof opening sequence to illustrate some popular misconceptions, with a screaming girl victim rescued from "unmentionable obscenities" by a crucifix-wielding hero, the film concentrates almost entirely on ritual as performed by Alex Sanders' now famous coven."

I'd love to own this copy of Famous Monsters. The Curse of the Demon cover. 😈📚
My dad remembers the day he bought it with his friends. (Sadly lost now).
Would make an amazing poster or tee. 🖤

What if... it were a different Coyote in every Roadrunner cartoon? Could that be why it appears that he never learns? 'Ready.. Set.. Zoom!' (dir. Chuck Jones, 1955). #Coyote

Had a top-notch evening at Finsbury Park Picturehouse for a preview of Doug Weir’s fabulous new 4K restoration of MADNESS: TAKE IT OR LEAVE it, followed by an entertaining and illuminating Q&A with Madness’s Suggs and Mike, hosted by the BFI’s inimitable Vic Pratt.

You did a great job and what a fun evening! I chatted to some fabulous women afterwards who were fans back in the day and shared memories of seeing the band live.

Thrilled to see another lovely review of my book, ‘The Films of Aleksandr Rou: Father of Soviet Fairy-Tale Cinema’, in Slavic and East European Journal. You can read more reviews and a free sample at ow.ly/OyL450YJNJr

ALT Image shows the cover of the book ‘The Films of Aleksandr Rou: Father of Soviet Fairy-Tale Cinema’ by Deborah Allison, plus an extract of a review by Marina Rojavin, published in Slavic and East European Journal, which reads: ‘The book is a fantastic companion for both specialists and amateurs. After the author’s analysis, even if you have already watched Rou’s films, you will want to watch them again. I hope that many people read this book and that it inspires them to watch Rou’s films with an appreciative eye.’
