D’Angelo was more than a voice. He was a feeling.
The kind that could silence a room or move a crowd with one note. His music carried the soul of gospel, the grit of hip-hop, and the smoothness of pure R&B, creating a sound that changed everything. From ‘Brown Sugar’ to ‘Voodoo,’ he gave us music that felt human and divine all at once. His art gave soul a new language and reminded us that it’s not just a genre, it’s a truth.
After a private battle with pancreatic cancer, D’Angelo has transitioned at the age of 51. Today, we say goodbye, and thank you for your voice, your vision, and your soul. Rest easy, king. 🖤

I’ve got a lot to say about this through the lens of photography.
After years of championing Black voices in photography, I’ve seen all of it, time + time again. Not just from the usual places, but often from those who call themselves allies.
It’s a crying shame.

Photography is, in many respects, an exercise in power, especially when it comes to how people are seen + understood.
In which case, it is good to remember this truth: with great power comes great responsibility.

Please can people stop saying ‘Giving a voice to the voiceless’
Everyone has a voice, but some voices are oppressed, shut down, ignored.
You can help to amplify, you can work to dismantle the systems in place, you can educate yourself… but you do not ‘give it’.

Haven’t been super active on social media in a week and a half or so. Any time I come back after a short break, I realize how much of a dead end all of these platforms are, and how much time is wasted on here. These platforms were supposed to be extensions of humans and human interaction, but unfortunately, people seem to be an extension of social media now. Protect your headspace, friends 🫶🫶🫶

Photographers, there is no ultimate authority to appeal to. No international agency, no regional arts committee.
Make work that you like.
Destroy the critics in your brain. Starve them.

My heart goes out to #TamirRice’s family, especially to his mother, Samaria Rice, on today, Tamir’s birthday.
He should be celebrating 21 years.
It is a grave injustice that he’s not.
And I just can’t imagine how devastating that is for Ms. Rice…I’m sorry.

Happy Birthday Tamir Rice.
#TamirRice was 12 years old when he was killed by the Cleveland Police in less than 2.5 seconds. Tamir was a CHILD playing in a park when he was taken from us.
Today, he should be turning 21.

take your time with your vision, some things will take longer than others and not everyone works at the same pace. Remember there is only one of you.
