Oggi sono una rarità: quel piccolo tocco di magia estiva è via via scomparso, con qualche ricomparsa di tanto in tanto. La lucciola è un bioindicatore: la sua presenza segnala un ecosistema in salute, la sua assenza un ambiente sotto pressione e non in equilibrio. La tutela delle specie rare ha prodotto risultati. Le evidenze recenti mostrano però che anche le specie comuni — quelle da cui dipende, tra l'altro, il cibo sulla nostra tavola — sono in declino. Dove oggi ha sede la Questura di Venezia, un tempo sorgeva una tra le numerose isole del complesso veneziano, destinata per lungo tempo ad uso religioso, dedicato a Santa Chiara. Tra la vita monastica e l’attuale utilizzo, nell’800 è stata convertita a soccorso militare. Chiesa e campanile sono stati con l’occasione rasi al suolo. Where the Venice Police Headquarters now stands, there once stood one of the many islands that made up the Venetian complex; for a long time, it was used for religious purposes and was dedicated to Saint Clare. Between its monastic past and its current use, it was converted into a military hospital in the 19th century. The church and bell tower were razed to the ground at that time. Dopo gli anni di formazione a Venezia, si trasferisce a Roma nel 1781, dove la sua arte raggiunge piena maturità. Opere come Teseo e il Minotauro rivelano una padronanza del marmo fuori dal comune: le superfici sembrano vive, la pietra diventa carne. La sua fama cresce rapidamente fino a varcare i confini italiani — Napoleone è tra coloro che gli commissionano opere — e il suo nome diventa sinonimo di una nuova estetica: forme semplici e regolari, ispirate all'antichità classica. Antonio Canova was born in Possagno in 1757 into a family of stonemasons: sculpture was almost his destiny. After training in Venice, he moved to Rome in 1781, where his art reached full maturity. Works such as Theseus and the Minotaur reveal an extraordinary mastery of marble: the surfaces seem alive, the stone becomes flesh. His fame grew rapidly, spreading beyond Italy’s borders — Napoleon was among those who commissioned works from him — and his name became synonymous with a new aesthetic: simple, regular forms inspired by classical antiquity. He is considered, alongside the painter Jacques-Louis David, one of the principal precursors of Neoclassicism. In Possagno, his birthplace, he designed the Canovian Temple, which became his final resting place. There is a village in the province of Venice that still preserves what was once a source of wealth for the village itself, its inhabitants and those living nearby.
