I am undone.
Just look at this little kid.
Owen hasn't moved, has had nothing to eat or drink, for 8 days.
And then this happened last night.
He licked his lips, took a few tremulous steps, then ate, oh-so-slowly, for 19 minutes.🥹
What a little warrior.
(In case you're wondering - his spines are all sticking up from where I have administered a twice daily bolus of fluids, to keep him alive, and he's in such a poor state that his skin has lost all elasticity.
But as he gradually absorbs nourishment again his skin will recover and his spines will lay flat again).

Poor darling Owen is still critical, still not eating, and only still alive because of the fluids and drugs I'm injecting him with twice a day.
He's using every ounce of energy to keep living, and can't afford to spend any on digesting food.
He has more internal parasites than I've seen in a live hedgehog for many years.
Aside from a huge burden of deadly lungworm, putting him in acute respiratory distress, and a massive gutful of roundworm, leaching any nutrients left in his frail little body, Owen is full of lethal fluke.
Below are three microscopic images I took from a sample of the tiniest blob of poo Owen produced.
These are three adult fluke.
It's very rare to see one.
But that tiny blob contained three.
I shudder to think how many more are inside his body.
Inside each fluke's body you can see the eggs it is producing.
Fluke are hermaphrodites, so produce self-fertilised eggs.
The golden coloured ones are ready to hatch.
Just one is enough to tip the balance and kill Owen.
Adult flukes live in the digestive tract, liver and bile ducts.
They have strong suckers and physically bite into the delicate mucosal lining to feed on tissue and blood.
They literally eat the living liver.
This causes sharp, agonising pain.
Even without consuming enough liver tissue to cause organ failure on its own, in a wild animal whose body is already being starved by roundworms and suffocated by lungworms, that added physical stress can easily trigger a fatal heart attack or total immune collapse.
Owen's life is on a knife edge.
Only time will tell.
I am so touched by all the loving well-wishes this dear little boy has received. If only he knew how many people are rooting for him.🥹
Please do remember to wash your outside dishes and baths well, at least once a week, preferably daily.
It's likely Owen got fluke from contaminated water.

🔊This poor boy is Owen.
Owen's finder is a delivery driver.
Driving along a busy highway he noticed traffic ahead of him diverting and swerving around something in the road, so he slowed.
He saw Owen, thought he was dead, then saw what the other drivers must have seen - this poor darling flinching each time another bird came down to peck at him.
Thankfully this busy delivery driver's heart was full of compassion and he stopped, scooped poor Owen up off the road, wrapped him in some bubble wrap and brought him straight here.
If not for the kindness of this man, Owen would have suffered an agonising, terrifying death.
I'm so grateful for his act of mercy.
As you can hear, the poor darling is in acute respiratory distress, struggling for every breath, so his prognosis is still poor.
But for now he is safe, warm, free from fear, and having every medication possible to help him overcome this lung infection (secondary to parasite invasion).
Seriously ill hedgehogs suffer from hypothermia.
This is a stage of dying where the blood is redirected to the vital organs, to keep them supplied with oxygen for as long as possible, leaving the rest of the body feeling cold.
So the hedgehog seeks warmth.
Tarmac and paving holds the sun's heat longer than soil or grass, so these poor animals often drag themselves onto a road, for the residue heat the surface retains.
Please remember this, and if you see a hedgehog in the road who isn't obviously dead, pull over and check, when it's safe to do so.

On September 8, 2026, the CEO, Terry Filbert, issued this statement: "Baru’s team of mining and finance professionals boasts extensive experience in starting and operating gold and coal assets. Baru is positioned to become Indonesia’s next gold producer."
The locals have fought this for years, fearing for their settlements and water supplies, but they and this beautiful and unique little bird don't matter to the Indonesian government as it continues its large-scale environmental destruction.

This case centres on Odie (pictured), a gentle dog who suffered years of violence before losing his life.
Odie lived in a household where his owner was being subjected to coercive control. Over more than five years, Odie became a target for intimidation and cruelty, repeatedly harmed as part of the offender’s pattern of abuse.
Footage shown in court revealed Odie yelping in pain as he was shouted at, kicked, and brutalised. In one incident, he was struck with a hammer. His injuries were so severe that Odie did not survive.
Today, the offender — Lewis Walker, 33, of Cherry Sutton, #widnes, Cheshire — has been convicted after admitting a charge of controlling or coercive behaviour. The violence inflicted on Odie forms part of the factual basis of the case and will be taken into account at sentencing.
Walker has been remanded into custody and will be sentenced on September 28. The court heard that his behaviour, including the mistreatment of animals, caused “serious alarm or distress”.
Odie’s suffering is a stark reminder that animals are often the first victims in violent and controlling environments. His life mattered, and his story deserves to be told.

I'm getting lots of calls from people who have decided to clean out their garage, outbuilding or shed and have found a 'sleeping' hedgehog.
Firstly, please leave them there.
Put everything back as it was, as gently and quietly as possible, and walk away.
Whatever you wanted to do that day is not worth killing a precious endangered animal for.
Because of the false autumn this year (the drought traumatised trees into dropping their leaves early, as a survival tactic, and the smell of those decaying leaves is an 'autumn is here' trigger for hedgehogs), a lot are hibernating early.
Hibernation isn't a sleep.
It's a lowered metabolism.
The heartbeat is lowered dramatically from 190 beats per minute to around 15.
A breath is taken only once every few minutes.
Their body temperature is dropped from 35C to around 5C.
Systems not needed for life are shut down.
A hibernating hedgehog burns just 1 calorie per day.
Isn't that incredible?
They still have a sleeping and waking cycle, and are perfectly aware and can hear, but are stiff, rigid, and cannot move.
Trapped and helpless in that near-death state.
It takes weeks of preparation to achieve this incredible transformation.
It cannot be instantly undone.
Even the fastest rising, by a young fit hedgehog, takes about 12 hours, before the heart is beating fast enough and there's enough oxygen in the bloodstream to allow muscles to move again.
If a hedgehog in a state of hibernation is terrified (by being disturbed by a human) and is panicked into trying to rise too fast, the strain can be too much for him and he'll have a heart attack.
It's so dangerous to disturb them that it's actually against the law - and goodness knows our wildlife have few enough laws protecting them.
But leaving them in peace is more than obeying the law.
It's human kindness.
After destroying their own natural habitat, it’s the least we can do - to allow them safe passage through the winter, in whatever space of ours they choose to inhabit.
And they chose to inhabit your space because it was undisturbed.
Unused.
Just as we can smell when a house is empty, hedgehogs can smell when something has lain undisturbed - be it a roll of carpet, a bag of old clothes, or a sack of compost.
Undisturbed means safety to a desperate animal.
These poor displaced gentle creatures take the chance that small space will stay undisturbed, long enough for them to survive winter.
So if you're having a clear out and find a hedgehog please let them stay in peace, undisturbed.
Put any covering back just how you found it.
Please don't be tempted to add to it, to 'make them more comfy'. 🥰
It's lovely that you feel that way, but the hedgehog will just see it as a predator making their nest unsafe.
If there's no access to the building that you know of, please leave the door open a little, or make a cat-flap size hole in the door.
And leave a clean dish of water outside the building, and a dish of dry cat or dog food outside in the evenings ( a complete food that has meat as the first listed ingredient).
If they are too frightened to continue hibernating there, they will use up a great deal of precious stored energy moving on, and will need to replenish that.
And then enjoy the rare privilege, that this precious endangered wild animal trusted you and your garden to be at his most vulnerable.❤️

Hedgehogs are great creatures of habit, and will always return to the same spot to hibernate, if they can.
Darling Belina has already returned here, to 'her' pen, and is beginning to prepare for hibernation this year.
With the prolonged drought conditions forcing trees to drop their fruit and leaves early, and the absence of natural food, the signs and smells of approaching autumn have arrived very prematurely this year, so hedgehogs are likely to enter hibernation early.
So now is the ideal time to check any empty hedgehog houses in your garden, to ensure they are still weatherproof, and give them a good clean out.
Please always use the stick test first, to make absolutely sure the house doesn't have a resident (see below).
Once the houses are completely dry, line them with newspaper and stuff them full to the brim with clean dry hay.
Then poke your hand inside the hay, through the doorway, and flatten down an area, to make an inviting cosy nest.

Don't worry if the house already has a resident. Just fill a large flowerpot or bucket with fresh hay and lie it on its side, next to the house, so the resident can help themselves to clean sheets.😊
Hedgehogs build 2, sometime 3 hibernation nests, just in case their chosen nest becomes endangered or flooded.
This forward-thinking means they always have a safe warm ready-made shelter to move straight into, at a time when dry nesting material would be impossible to find, and they wouldn't have the energy to build.

I've called this dainty little girl Belina (as in Thumbelina) and I've been waiting to catch her at my own garden feeder.
If you ever hear a hedgehog making this sound, like popcorn cooking/coffee percolating, please get them to a rescue urgently.
Just like ours, healthy hedgehog breathing is silent.
But Belina's lungs are full of fluid and the sound you hear is the air from each breath bubbling through the fluid.
The fluid is the mucus the body makes when the lung lining is irritated by lungworm. If left untreated secondary infections arise, and the infestation will prove fatal.
Lungworm is a parasite that uses slugs and snails as an intermediate host (where it grows and matures), and animals such as the hedgehog as the definitive host (where it reproduces).
Contrary to popular belief, slugs and snails aren't part of a hedgehog's natural diet, and (apart from the odd curious juvenile experimenting) are only eaten in desperation when suffering from starvation.
But a hedgehog doesn't have to eat a slug to get infected - just eating food or drinking water that a slug has moved over and left infected slime on is enough. So please ensure you wash all hedgehog feeding dishes and surfaces well each morning.
Lungworm used to be quite rare, confined just to the south coast of England. But in the last 20 years, due to animal exportation and intensive farming methods, this deadly parasite has now spread, and has even reached the Scottish Highlands.
Providing your hedgehogs with good safe food (cat or dog food only) and clean water will help them fight this terrible condition, as a well nourished hedgehog will have a strong immune system.
My own healthy visitors who have had access to good food have left a trail that smells successful and healthy, and which frail little Belina followed, and found food -and me.🥰

We had a little rain yesterday here in Hampshire, the first serious shower for over 50 days, and already the life it brings has made a difference.
Worms are back on the menu again, as this dear fox so beautifully demonstrates.
Catching worms without snapping them takes practice, and a technique this juvenile has been forced to master.
The fact he is actively hunting them, when earthworms normally provide such a small part of a fox's diet, illustrates just how hard any other food is to find.
So please continue providing food, especially for your visiting hedgehogs, as your good safe balanced nutrition is a life saver.

A Welsh beach has ended its donkey rides after more than a century on the sand. The family who have run them since 1918 say they are heartbroken. 🫏🏖️⚖️
Bridgend Council extended Coney Beach's seasonal dog restrictions to cover all animals from 1 May to 30 September, so no licence can be granted for donkey or pony riding. Jay Bateman, whose family has run the rides at Porthcawl since 1918, says his livelihood has gone with it.
The council frames the change as part of the Porthcawl Waterfront Regeneration Scheme rather than an animal welfare ruling, though welfare campaigners have welcomed it anyway. Donkey sanctuary founder Jacqui Howe argues beach rides belong to a bygone era, alongside circuses and greyhound racing, which Wales is also moving to ban.

Taking a prize home to her hungry babies.
This is the desperate badger mum who came into my garden looking for anything to eat, and left with nothing.
The following evening I put some food out for her in the woods, where I know she visits (to drink from the water I leave out there daily for wildlife).
I left good quality dry cat food for her to eat, and slices of Chubb Roll and chopped apples and pears to take home to her cubs.
While textbook badger behaviour states they don't carry food to cubs, extreme environmental stress forces wildlife to adapt and break the rules, and as there's zero natural forage in this drought, clearly that's what this clever mum was doing.
She spent the whole night there.
After all these weeks of deprivation and stress it must have felt like Christmas for this sweet mum.
She made several trips back to her sett with food, in between eating for herself and resting and drinking.
Just before dawn she covered up what was left, and went to bed full and content.

A surprise visitor to my garden.
It's 4.30 in the morning, the end of a hard night's foraging, and this poor badger mum is going home to her hungry cubs empty handed.
Again.
Badgers don't want to come into gardens.
It's a massive risk to get that close to humans.
This is an act of profound desperation.
She tried digging for worms (which make up 80% of a badger's diet), but the prolonged drought has left the soil baked dry and barren.
The hedgehog feeders were inaccessible and the cat food had all been eaten by the visiting fox family.
She stay for half an hour and left as starving as she arrived.
If a hedgehog had been accessible she would have risked being wounded, just to eat and feed her cubs.
Badgers do NOT hunt hedgehogs, but a starving animal will eat anything to stay alive.
But it's NOT natural.
In fact it's no more natural than starving third world children eating mud.
Or prisoners of war eating pebbles.
Or victims of a mountain plane crash eating each other.
These are acts of desperation.
It's eat this or die.
And why hedgehogs? Why not cats or fox cubs - a much safer and more satisfying meal?
Simply because cats and foxes run away, hedgehogs don't.
And badgers are foragers, not hunters.
You don't need a degree in zoology to know that.
Just your own common sense.
Don't believe the perverts who enjoy hurting animals, or the callous dishonest farmers.
Believe your own eyes.
Just look at that low, squat body and lumbering gait: built for low-gravity stability while digging, and moving through dense undergrowth. Not for chasing down prey.
Look at the small head and downward facing eyes: perfect for focusing on the ground directly in front of their nose to locate worms and insects, but giving them a very limited field of view for spotting or tracking moving animals.
And take a look at those short stumpy legs: designed for power and endurance while excavating setts and turning over soil, making them incapable of the speed or agility required by true hunters.
The physical traits you can see with your own eyes are the textbook definition of a specialised fossorial (digging) forager, not a predator.
Because of this specific anatomy, badgers lack the biological machinery to actively hunt or target other mammals.
They are overwhelmingly, scientifically, anatomically, blatantly obvious ground-level foragers.
The idea that badgers systematically track or target hedgehogs is a narrative pushed by groups looking to justify culls, rather than an accurate description of badger biology.
In reality, a badger's daily life revolves around patiently snuffling through the soil for worms and grubs, and any departure from this is a rare, situational event born of sheer desperation.
So please remember this, next time some deviant shows you a hedgehog pelt, seeking your validation and inciting hatred towards these innocent animals.
