MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE: A 42-year-old Gobabis woman says she has been left with lasting physical complications and chronic pain after a surgical sponge was left inside her abdomen during a Caesarean section at Gobabis State Hospital in December 2023.
The woman, represented by her lawyer Mirjam Mupolo, is suing the health ministry and the government for N$2.5 million in damages.
On 12 December 2023, she was admitted at the hospital for childbirth while experiencing labour pains. On 14 December, she reportedly underwent a Caesarean section.
She accuses medical staff at the hospital of failing to remove all surgical materials before closing her wound, resulting in a sponge being left inside her abdomen.
Her court documents indicate that she subsequently developed severe abdominal pain, swelling and persistent vomiting following the operation.
Her condition worsened and she was eventually transferred to Windhoek for further treatment.
A scan conducted on 18 December 2023 revealed a suspected foreign object in her abdomen. She later underwent an exploratory operation during which the object was removed.

Last night, women broke barriers and records across the country. That incredible progress started with women who, generations ago, dared to break the mold and push open doors that had been closed to them for far too long. These milestones are a powerful reminder that when women can step into their power, they expand what’s possible for those who come next—and that our democracy is stronger when our government reflects the people it serves. nbcnews.com/politics/2026-el…

Reports of abuse, humiliation, neglect and medical procedures performed without informed consent in maternity facilities have prompted Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) MP Lilani Brinkman to seek a National Assembly debate on obstetric violence.
Brinkman wants the House to examine how existing policies and professional regulations protecting patients are implemented and enforced, particularly in relation to women's treatment during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period.
In a notice of motion, she proposes reviewing existing policies and laws to protect women's rights to dignity, privacy and informed consent. She also wants accessible and confidential complaint mechanisms to ensure allegations of mistreatment are investigated and appropriate action taken where misconduct is established.
Other proposals include continuous training of healthcare workers on respectful maternity care, patient rights and professional ethics, as well as regular monitoring and reporting on compliance with maternity care standards.

Last week, @Zamara_fdn alongside implementing partners, took the #KaleidoscopeProject to Samburu and West Pokot, engaging community health providers and young people in Values Clarification and Attitude Transformation (VCAT) sessions focused on post-abortion care.
We are making room for the difficult conversations, questioning beliefs that fuel stigma, and reflecting on how our values and attitudes shape the care people receive and the experiences they have within their communities.

Good news: a generic version of lenacapavir for HIV prevention has been FDA-approved. More manufacturers can help lower costs and increase access, bringing this game-changing innovation within reach of the countries and communities that need it most.
Innovation saves lives only when access follows. #UnitedToEndAIDS

🚨 There's nothing funny about normalizing misogyny.
The words we normalize shape the attitudes we tolerate.
Dismissing #misogyny as "just a joke" perpetuates a culture where hating and harming women and girls is excused.
And there is #NoExcuse for it.

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2026 was awarded to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay for her efforts to promote peace and international law.
Born into a family of Indian Tamil origin under apartheid in Durban, South Africa, Pillay became a lawyer and legal pioneer, confronting deep structural discrimination, segregation and exclusion. A common thread runs from her early work defending Nelson Mandela and others who stood up against apartheid to her service as a judge in some of the key international court cases of our time.
Pillay has held states and national leaders accountable and brought hope to victims of violence and conflict.
In this call with the Norwegian Nobel Committee shortly after the announcement, Pillay said the prize is a recognition for all jurists who work with international law nobelprize.org/prizes/peace/…

A court ruling can have consequences far beyond the courtroom.
In his latest opinion piece for People Daily, Martin Onyango, Associate Director for Africa Legal Strategies at the Center for Reproductive Rights, examines the implications of the Court of Appeal’s April 2026 ruling in the Malindi case.
The ruling raises an important question: what happens when constitutional rights are narrowed in ways that make access to healthcare more difficult?

I don’t think it is appropriate ‘especially’ for legal scholars to use dehumanizing words and enable the disrespect of human rights. It is an insult to the legal profession. You can disagree with a person without bashing their sexuality.
