Over two billion years, a fierce battle has raged between bacteria and the viruses that infect them. The resulting evolution has shaped the way our bodies fight disease today. @vcallier reports: quantamagazine.org/the-ancie…

How is it that some nociceptors—the sensory neurons that detect heat, chemical irritants and toxins—can withstand a lifespan’s worth of exposure to noxious stimuli, whereas others die? New findings reveal how they do it.

Histones, the protein spools around which our DNA is wrapped, may be doing a lot more in cells than packaging and regulating genes, writes @vcallier: buff.ly/3NrIfrv

Congratulations to our 2024 medicine laureate Victor Ambros ✨
This morning he celebrated the news of his prize with his colleague and wife Rosalind Lee, who was also the first author on the 1993 'Cell' paper cited by the Nobel Committee.

A mind-bogglingly old sex chromosome, in octopus!
cool research from @pastramimachine lab,
with great context and comments from @evolscientist @sexchrlab @jessicakabbott 🙏
The octopus sex chromosome appears to have been maintained over hundreds of millions of years, making it the most ancient of such chromosomes in animals trib.al/XrWEz1e

Great article by @vcallier in @KnowableMag on various ways histones directly regulate metabolism. I think we should start thinking about chromatin, not just histones, as a “metabolic organelle”. This view could reshape our understanding of histone/DNA modifications and mutations.
