This year’s #NobelPrize laureate in physics Anne L’Huillier discovered that many different overtones of light arose when she transmitted infrared laser light through a noble gas.
Each overtone is a light wave with a given number of cycles for each cycle in the laser light. They are caused by the laser light interacting with atoms in the gas; it gives some electrons extra energy that is then emitted as light. L’Huillier has continued to explore this phenomenon, laying the ground for subsequent breakthroughs.

With many 🧩 dropping recently, a more complete picture is emerging of LLMs not as a chatbot, but the kernel process of a new Operating System. E.g. today it orchestrates:
- Input & Output across modalities (text, audio, vision)
- Code interpreter, ability to write & run programs
- Browser / internet access
- Embeddings database for files and internal memory storage & retrieval
A lot of computing concepts carry over. Currently we have single-threaded execution running at ~10Hz (tok/s) and enjoy looking at the assembly-level execution traces stream by. Concepts from computer security carry over, with attacks, defenses and emerging vulnerabilities.
I also like the nearest neighbor analogy of "Operating System" because the industry is starting to shape up similar:
Windows, OS X, and Linux <-> GPT, PaLM, Claude, and Llama/Mistral(?:)).
An OS comes with default apps but has an app store.
Most apps can be adapted to multiple platforms.
TLDR looking at LLMs as chatbots is the same as looking at early computers as calculators. We're seeing an emergence of a whole new computing paradigm, and it is very early.

Belebele (bit.ly/47UTSAh) was released today and it gives us unprecedented insight into the multilingual capabilities of LLMs. We present full results across 122 languages for Llama (1&2), Falcon, and Chat-GPT (3.5turbo). Some findings in the thread:

This is huge: Llama-v2 is open source, with a license that authorizes commercial use!
This is going to change the landscape of the LLM market.
Llama-v2 is available on Microsoft Azure and will be available on AWS, Hugging Face and other providers
Pretrained and fine-tuned models are available with 7B, 13B and 70B parameters.

A number of personalities from industry and academia have endorsed our open source approach: about.fb.com/news/2023/07/ll…
What a travesty...It's not just about being fiduciaries, or being legally compliant, but also being fair when nobody's watching... Keyhole Morals... what one does when nobody is watching.

#AlkaCzar to world -- post Medvedev semi-final on-court interview:
Now is not a time to be afraid
The rain in Spain, stays mainly in the plain...
But here in the Valley, what a pain!
For months on end, in the hills, in the valleys,
On the steppes, grasslands, desert.
In the morning, at night, with wind and without.
Rain, rain, come again. But please, on another plain!

Silicon Valley stands together with Founders. Continuing to innovate. Continuing to build. This will make us stronger. Nearly universal agreement with this statement well beyond those listed. Fed needs to act now to make sure depositors are 100% protected.

An explainer on what is going on with Silicon Valley Bank:
- In 2021 SVB saw a mass influx in deposits, which jumped from $61.76bn at the end of 2019 to $189.20bn at the end of 2021.
- As deposits grew, SVB could not grow their loan book fast enough to generate the yield they wanted to see on this capital. As a result, they purchased a large amount (over $80bn!) in mortgage backed securities (MBS) with these deposits for their hold-to-maturity (HTM) portfolio.
- 97% of these MBS were 10+ year duration, with a weighted average yield of 1.56%.
- The issue is that as the Fed raised interest rates in 2022 and continued to do so through 2023, the value of SVB’s MBS plummeted. This is because investors can now purchase long-duration "risk-free" bonds from the Fed at a 2.5x higher yield.
- This is not a liquidity issue as long as SVB maintains their deposits, since these securities will pay out more than they cost eventually.
- However, yesterday afternoon, SVB announced that they had sold $21bn of their Available For Sale (AFS) securities at a $1.8bn loss, and were raising another $2.25bn in equity and debt. This came as a surprise to investors, who were under the impression that SVB had enough liquidity to avoid selling their AFS portfolio.
Nice quote @RichardSocher! Nice to see your work, and your peer Davids, compared to the Goliaths.

The natural instinct with AI is to look at the current things that get more efficient. But the bigger impact is the ability to bring those more efficient solutions to markets that previously couldn’t afford a solution before. That’s the breakthrough opportunity.

openAI or "open"AI?
1/ OpenAI's #chatgpt release will mark the beginning of the end of the golden age of open research in deep learning.
This will have significant implications for LLM research going forward.
