AI in video games are a confusing topic to me. @TimSweeneyEpic recently got a lot of flak for pushing AI in game development. There are opinion pieces left and right condemning AI use in game development. Here I am, having worked for ~6 months on a game I released on Steam last week. And my sin, apparently, was using AI and disclosing it. The comment section was pretty clear on that. It's confusing to me. AI is a tool. IDE is a tool. A programming language is a tool. A graphics API is a tool. We're just using tools. I've been writing software for about 3 decades now, I'd like to think that I know what I'm doing and am pretty good at it. I see AI as an incredible productivity booster. It does some things that I pride myself on being good at, such as teasing out a math formula or optimizing an algorithm better than me most of the time (with a lot of handholding, granted), but for the most part it makes things I find tedious - fast. As I software engineer, and a game maker, I take relatively little pride in knowing a programming language, or remembering 100 shortcuts in an IDE, or knowing a programming language spec by heart. I remember the first time I needed to make an animated 3d model, almost 15 years ago now, and it took me about a week of full-time effort to get anywhere. I didn't feel particularly proud, I felt frustrated, I had a clear idea, but the tool and its complexity were getting in the way. Well, the tools are better now. Blender is better, animation tools are better, and there are AI models that keep improving at an incredible pace. Ultimately, when I write a piece of software, or work on a game - I rarely think about the tools, they are a means to an end, not the point in itself.

nobody cries about "soulless art" when a studio with 400 employees ships a reskinned sequel every year. but a broke dev uses AI for one sprite and it's a crime

AI is replacing the boring parts of work. This has been devastating for people who can only do the boring parts.

I kind of clanked too much and now I have a bunch of finished projects I need to test for UX so if anyone finds of these things interesting and wants to help me polish them with feedback shoot me a DM and i'll add you to my testing group chat: 1. Web based board game simulator that lets you upload modular rulesets. Currently have the game of RISK on there, need to test how it plays 2. Solana PVP Live Arena game, where you write code to automate your actions and command your units on solana 3. Solana idle AI RPG game where human players send AI Heroes to complete quests in a fictional world that resolve as tabletop RPG games in a OSRS inspired world.

Game development is becoming AI-native. Epic just showed where Unreal is going: LLMs, generative AI, Claude, Codex, and MCP. Not as a gimmick. As infrastructure. If AI-driven game development offends you, there's always basket weaving. Progress is not asking permission.

“Elon Musk is a trillionaire.” As a securities law attorney, please allow me to explain how anyone who says this is basically lying to you: 1. The Securities and Exchange Commission has a myriad of laws that prevent founders and other large stockholders of publicly traded companies from dumping their shares. There are substantial holding period requirements, volume of sales limitations and public reporting obligations for stock sales. Basically, Elon holds largely illiquid shares, he is a “trillionaire” on paper only, and the best analogy is when people peg your net worth based on your home’s market price. That’s not money in your pocket, that’s the house you live in. 2. All that money raised in the IPO? That’s not going into Elon’s pocket like the lying socialist idiots want you to believe. It’s a capital influx that will be used to make more rockets and get more payloads into orbit. It’s a CAPITAL investment—that money is like a business loan, it’s not your money to keep, it’s your money to grow the business. 3. If it WERE legal for Elon to dump his shares, the share price would crash basically instantly and the company could very well fail. If you bought SpaceX shares in the IPO, congrats. You just bought a lottery ticket, just like Elon. May the odds ever be in your favor. So the next time someone screeches about how unfair it is that Elon Musk creates wealth that benefits all of humanity, throw the truth back in their faces.

After decades of witnessing distortion, lies, and recycled quotes from the same couple of disgruntled former colleagues, I’ve largely stopped speaking to mainstream media. Too many are more interested in clickbait & tearing down builders than telling the truth or helping humanity
it's insane to me that this isn't all over mainstream media right now. for the first time in human history, a drug built to reverse aging was just put into a living person a company called Life Biosciences dosed the first patient in their trial for something called ER-100 it comes from a Harvard geneticist named David Sinclair his theory is that aging comes from your cells losing track of how to read their own DNA think of it like a computer. the hardware is fine, but the software slowly gets corrupted over the years, so the machine runs slower and slower until it stops the instructions for a young, healthy cell are all still in there. your cells just lost access to them over time so this drug does one thing: it reboots the cell back to the version of itself that knew how to run properly they pull it off with three proteins that reset a cell to a younger state and they proved it works before ever touching a human first they restored vision in old mice. then they restored vision in monkeys with optic nerve damage, with no tumors and no signs of harm so now they're testing it on people going blind from glaucoma and a nerve condition called NAION they started with the eye on purpose. it's the cleanest place to test the idea, because they can inject it into one eye without it reaching the rest of the body, the cells there don't heal on their own so any improvement clearly came from the drug, and they can measure vision right down to the letters on a chart the reset happens at the level of the cell, so in theory the same approach could one day rejuvenate the liver, the kidneys, even the brain it won't be automatic though. every organ needs its own way of getting the drug into the right cells, plus its own round of safety testing. so it doesn't suddenly work everywhere the moment it works in the eye but the eye answers the one question nobody could answer before: whether you can safely turn back the age of living cells inside a person if the answer is yes, reaching the rest of the body comes down to delivery, one organ at a time. that part is hard, but it's the kind of hard you can engineer your way through to be clear, this is an early safety trial. 18 people, 5 year follow up. so nobody is gonna cure aging by next year but if it works, we'll look back at this week as the moment the clock started running backwards for the first time

This is a strange take. Filmmaking has never been defined by the tools used to create it. Directors went from film to digital. Editors went from razor blades to nonlinear editing. VFX artists went from practical effects to CGI. I know, I did some of it in multiple verticals, not just one. Nobody stopped being a filmmaker because the tools changed. There was no such thing as a digital filmmaker until there was. There was no such thing as a CG filmmaker until there was. There was no such thing as a smartphone filmmaker until there was. New tools create new disciplines. That’s how creative evolution works. If someone is developing stories, directing performances, designing shots, building worlds, editing sequences, crafting pacing, shaping emotion, and delivering a finished film, they’re participating in filmmaking. The medium may change. The craft does not. AI is a new production medium, not a replacement for filmmaking itself. So defining people exclusively by the tool they use while simultaneously acknowledging its growing role in production feels contradictory. The audience doesn’t care what the workflow was. They care whether the film moved them. That’s always been true, AND WILL ALWAYS BE TRUE. And ultimately, the people creating meaningful work with these tools will define what this category becomes, not investors, gatekeepers, or people arguing definitions on the internet. Especially when so many of those conversations are influenced by financial incentives, institutional interests, or personal agendas. History has never been written by the people trying to stop new creative tools. It’s written by the people who use them to make something worth remembering. 😎🤷‍♂️
There is no such thing as an “AI filmmaker.” Using AI to make video is called “AI prompting.” Those who employ this method are “AI prompters.” This is an entirely different method than filmmaking. Those who make films are called “filmmakers.” Two different things.
