My kid's teacher started a classroom economy with fake money, but some kids figured out how to counterfeit it and created inflation so bad the whole system collapsed.
Got an email from Mrs. Patterson: "We need to discuss the economic crisis in Room 204."
Thought it was a joke. It wasn't.
Mrs. Patterson had created "Patterson Bucks" for good behavior. Kids earned money, spent it on prizes, learned capitalism.
Except three kids, including mine, figured out the Patterson Bucks were just printed on colored paper.
They made $47,000 in fake Patterson Bucks.
Flooded the market. Bought every prize. Started lending to other kids at interest.
"Your daughter is running a central bank," Mrs. Patterson said.
"She's eight."
"She's charging 15% interest on loans."
The counterfeiters got sophisticated. Different denominations. Security features. One kid added a hologram using craft supplies.
Mrs. Patterson couldn't tell real from fake anymore.
"I had to shut down the economy. Full monetary collapse. The class is in chaos."
She showed me the spreadsheet one kid made. "Patterson Buck Derivative Trading."
Eight year olds had created credit default swaps.
"How did this happen?"
"Your daughter watched The Big Short at your house, apparently."
She had. I thought she was sleeping.
Mrs. Patterson called a class meeting. Addressed the crisis.
"We're starting over with a new currency. More secure."
Kids demanded a seat at the table for monetary policy.
She agreed.
They created "Patterson Bucks 2.0" - blockchain-verified using a Google Sheet they all monitored.
Worked perfectly. No counterfeiting.
Then they voted to unionize and demanded higher wages for classroom jobs.
Mrs. Patterson: "I've created a monster."
School administration heard about it. Wanted to shut it down.
Parents revolted. "Our kids are learning economics!"
PBS came to film it. "Third Grade Economic Miracle."
Now it's curriculum. "The Patterson Economic System" taught in 40 schools.
My daughter consults. Gets paid in real money now.
$200 per school district training session.
She's saving for college.
Mrs. Patterson got a teaching award.
At the ceremony: "I tried to teach basic math. They taught me unregulated markets are dangerous."
My daughter whispered to me: "I still have $8,000 in original Patterson Bucks hidden. Waiting for the market to stabilize."
"That's not how inflation works."
"Yet."
She's starting a hedge fund when she turns 18.
I believe her.

I just blocked my boss on Teams.
HR reached out so I blocked them too.
Why has no one thought of this before?

Somewhere a therapist is trying to get people to "live in the moment" while this girl is already three levels deep into a made up game that only exists in her head and involves real trains.
The world needs more pointless whimsy.
Are you gazing up with me?
Were you, too, detained to see?
Worlds apart and yet aligned,
So many eyes look up with mine,
Vividly consumed like moth to flame.
Intentional or oblivious, all the same,
The subject of a world of prose,
Who gifts us both tides and flows.
Refusing disregard upon her rise,
Pinnacle of the night skies,
And then so gracefully falls.
Her light profoundly touching us all.
