No one painted water like Frits Thaulow.
Just look at the river in this painting: it feels like it’s really moving, catching the light and swallowing it at the same time. He painted it in 1892 and called it Water Mill, a picture that does the hardest thing in all of art… it makes water look alive.
What made him so extraordinary is that he could paint several kinds of water at once: the pale reflections of the buildings on the surface, the green tint of the water itself, the ripples running across the top, and the rocks sitting on the bottom, all of it layered together, melting into one another the way real water actually does.
Most painters can manage one of those things. He gave you all four in a single glance.
Thaulow was Norwegian, born in 1847, and he grew up in a country made of fjords, rivers and waterfalls, and he chose to spend his life on the single hardest subject a painter can attempt, the one thing that will not sit still and will not hold a shape. And in doing so, he made the fleeting beauty of water eternal...

Trop d'années sont gaspillées à vouloir plaire, à vouloir être aimée, à essayer de rentrer dans des moules qui ne nous étaient jamais destinés.
On se plie, on fait des compromis, on ravale nos mots... jusqu'au jour où l'on réalise que rien de tout cela n'avait vraiment d'importance. Les opinions qui nous faisaient peur autrefois, les obligations dans lesquelles on se sentait piégée, les personnes pour qui on se fatiguait à l'excès ? Elles n'en valaient jamais le poids que l'on portait.
Alors, à mon moi plus jeune : exprime ta vérité avec audace. Ne justifie pas tes choix à ceux qui n'ont rien à faire dans ta vie. Cesse de t'expliquer à ceux qui sont déterminés à ne pas te comprendre. Protège ton temps, ton énergie, ta paix. Et si quelque chose ne te sert pas, aie le courage de t'en éloigner - sans hésiter, sans t'excuser, sans te retourner.
Parce qu'au final, tes seuls regrets seront les fois où tu es restée silencieuse alors que tu aurais dû t'affirmer. Les fois où tu as toléré ce que tu aurais dû refuser. Les fois où tu as mis tout le monde avant toi... et que tu t'es oubliée."
