Today marks the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. As we honor the 1.5 million Armenians murdered by the Ottoman Empire across modern-day Turkey, Syria, and Armenia, we must refuse to let history repeat itself. In 2020, the military forces of Azerbaijan and Turkey attacked the Armenian population in Nagorno-Karabakh. In 2023, Azerbaijan expelled over 100,000 Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh, continuing the genocidal campaign that had begun over 100 years prior. On this day of remembrance, we reaffirm the right of the Armenian people — and all people — to freedom, safety, and self-determination.

The EU should pursue deeper strategic engagement in the altered geopolitical landscape of the South Caucasus after Azerbaijan recaptured the Nagorno Karabakh. That’s the core argument of my new @EU_ISS brief. You'll find it here: iss.europa.eu/content/after-…. A short summary thread:

The @sama-is-out press release hints IMO that they sacked Altman because he was running OpenAI too much like a startup and too little like a non-profit. Brockman stepping down from the board (or just from being chairman?) seems to tell the same story. openai.com/blog/openai-annou…

NASA's FIRMS fire monitoring map showing hotspots inside #Armenia's border, coinciding with areas targeted by #Azerbaijan. The map for 14 September appears a bit less compared to the previous, first day of military operations. Map and data source: @NASA

Can anyone confirm?
Receiving news that Armenia proper is being bombed by Azerbaijan. The dictatorship in Azerbaijan won’t let Armenians rest.

Talking with a few exhausted soldiers in Bakhmut, just back from the frontlines. "We don't have any new weapons here, new forces, nothing," says one of them. Another, who fought in 2014: "I'm expected to fight a tank with my Kalashnikov. We're just cannon fodder. We're fucked."

My friend is writing: "My husband's friend, a doctor from Zaporizhzhia, says a group of girls from Mariupol was admitted to their hospital. The oldest one is 10 years old. They have recto-vaginal tears."
A generation of activist European and else youth may be radicalized towards a massive war towards the east as these #RussianWarCrimes saturate their feeds. imo idk
Bucha, Kyiv region. The bodies of people with tied hands, who were shot dead by 🇷🇺 soldiers lie in the streets. These people were not in the military. They had no weapons. They posed no threat. How many more such cases are happening right now in the occupied territories? (1/2)
The sheer amount of executed civilians by the Russian army north of Kyiv recalls exactly one thing: the zachistki, or 'cleansing operations', in Chechnya in 1999-2000+. Times change, the Russian army stays the same. – at Armenia

Hi, I'm Armen Aramyan, founding editor of @doxajournal, and I've spent the last 12 months under house arrest due to a criminal investigation. My colleagues and I face up to 3 years in a Russian prison for a short video that we recorded in January 2021. Here's our story. THREAD 🧵

My favorite place in the world is Hardenbergstraße 27. #SoghomonTehlirian
Something I've noticed over the past week or so here: almost every Ukrainian I spoke to has made it clear that they blame not only Putin, but the average Russian as much (or more) for this war. The view is: we overthrew our corrupt government, and they accept their murderous one. – at Ukraine

Armenia must be the only country in the world with “nationalists” who actually want to abolish the nation

It is wonderful that the world is stepping up to support Ukrainians. And I hope everyone responds just as passionately when atrocities are perpetrated against people in Asia, the Middle East, or Africa. I know Armenians would have loved some more support last year.
