Together with colleagues I met today with members of Serbian civil society organisations, many of whom have been exposed to smear campaigns and sustained public stigmatisation, in some cases also open verbal assaults by public office holders.
This has no place in a country aspiring to join the EU. Civil society and journalists must be able to operate in a safe environment.
Civil society is a key partner for the 🇪🇺 in advancing Serbia’s path towards membership. It plays a fundamental role, often under difficult circumstances.

Ahead of the parliamentary elections in Serbia, the Delegation of the European Union has issued the following statement.

Spoke to @n1srbija on the key importance of the conditions and conduct of the upcoming elections will have for Serbia's EU accession path. Elections will serve as a litmus test of Serbia's commitment to EU values and principles and its democratic resilience. Spoke on the importance of consistent implementation of different adopted laws as well as the role of the media, including public broadcasters. I expressed regret that the REM Council could not reach a decision to ensure a more thorough and comprehensive media monitoring in election campaign.

Ambasador EU u Srbiji Andreas fon Bekerat učestvovao je na 10. Konferenciji Evropske teritorijalne saradnje u Novom Sadu.
"Teritorijalna saradnja je ključni deo podrške EU u regionu već 22 godine. U Srbiji smo, kroz više od 1400 projekata u prethodne 22 godine, unapredili život ljudi, opremili bolnice, škole, vrtiće, radili na očuvanju kulturnih spomenika i razvoju zelene energije", poručio je ambasador @vBeckerath .
Dodeljeno je i 13 novih ugovora za projekte saradnje između 🇷🇸i 🇲🇪, odnosno 🇷🇸i 🇲🇰.

I met today with President Vučić and Prime Minister Kurti, and raised the need to advance the normalisation of relations between Belgrade and Pristina.
Progress on normalisation of relations and advancement on the EU path have to go hand in hand.
The agreements reached through the EU-facilitated Dialogue, in particular the Ohrid Agreement, are binding.
Their implementation is not a favour to Brussels but owed to their citizens and a region waiting for normal relations.
The EU will continue to be an even-handed arbitrator. But facilitation cannot substitute for political will in Belgrade and Pristina.
It is time to move forward.

The Kosovo Specialist Chambers is an impartial and independent judicial body.
Its judgments must be respected and the convicted have the right to appeal.
This is about individual accountability and justice for victims and their families from all communities in Kosovo.
I call on actors in the region to help heal the wounds of the past. Only through reconciliation can the countries of the region overcome divisions and advance towards a common future in the EU.

The public glorification afforded to a convicted war criminal in Belgrade is an affront to the memory of the victims, their families, and all those who suffered during the conflicts in the Western Balkans.
True reconciliation cannot be built on revisionism, the denial of genocide or the honouring of perpetrators.
Serbia's path into the European Union requires an unequivocal commitment to fundamental European values and historical truth.
There is no place in Europe for the glorification of war criminals.

The images from Ratko Mladić’s funeral yesterday in Belgrade were shocking.
Ratko Mladić was a convicted war criminal. He was responsible for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. He died while serving a life sentence for the Srebrenica genocide and other crimes.
The elements of official support and the presence of some senior Serbian officials at the funeral are deeply regrettable. They demonstrate a failure to confront a dark chapter in Europe’s recent history and contradict the values underpinning Serbia’s path towards the European Union.
Our thoughts are with all the victims of the crimes committed in the countries of former Yugoslavia.

Ratko Mladić was convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. The return of his remains to Belgrade reminds Europe of the darkest pages in our recent history.
The glorification surrounding his death is incompatible with the values on which the EU path is built. That path requires confronting the past, genuine reconciliation and respecting the victims of war crimes.
The values that underpin our common future are not negotiable.
In this context, I have decided not to proceed with my planned visit to Serbia at this time.

EU support to Serbia’s fight against the wildfire continues, with teams from Romania, Germany, Czechia and Slovakia deployed in response to Serbia’s request.
Following an extension request from Serbia, 🇷🇴🇨🇿🇸🇰🇪🇺 assets will remain in the country until 5 September.

Following Serbia’s call for support yesterday, we have mobilised EU assistance through the 🇪🇺 Civil Protection Mechanism. @eu_echo. Four 🚁 from the strategic #rescEU reserve in Czechia 🇨🇿, Romania 🇷🇴 and Slovakia 🇸🇰 are being deployed, alongside firefighting teams from Germany 🇩🇪 and Romania 🇷🇴.

An 🇪🇺 liaison officer will also arrive in 🇷🇸 to coordinate with Serbian authorities, the EU Emergency Response Coordination Centre and teams on the ground, ensuring assistance reaches where it is needed most. 4 helicopters from our #rescEU fleet in 🇨🇿 , 🇷🇴 and 🇸🇰, and ground firefighting teams from 🇩🇪 and 🇷🇴 have been deployed via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
