Editorial: Mao Was a Vicious Dictator. The Uyghurs and Tibetans Paid the Highest Price
Beijing’s own verdict is that Mao made “mistakes.” That word is a cover. A leader who purges critics, starves villages, jails thinkers and seizes other peoples’ homelands is a dictator.
Uyghurs know the cost of that history. The conquest of our homeland began under Mao. The party that still bans the book about the famine is the same party that runs the camps today.

New Uyghur Restaurant to Open in Palatine, Illinois
A new Uyghur restaurant, Kashgar Uyghur Dining, is seeking approval to open at 139 N. Northwest Highway in Palatine, Illinois, bringing traditional Uyghur cuisine and culinary culture to the local community.
Co-owner Rahila Reshid presented the proposal Tuesday before Palatine’s Planning and Zoning Commission. She said the restaurant, which she operates with her husband, Waris Ablimit, will serve authentic Uyghur cuisine and halal food in a family-friendly environment.
The menu will feature traditional Uyghur dishes, including hand-pulled laghman noodles, polo (pilaf), lamb and chicken kebabs, dumplings, soups, naan, and other specialties.
“We hope we can be a long-term part of this community,” Reshid said.

Opinion: Uyghur Solidarity Month: Reinvigorating grassroots activism for Uyghur rights
opinion by @em_upson
By the time I finished my doctoral research on Uyghur advocacy networks earlier this year, I had spent many years advocating for Uyghur rights – but I wanted to do more. I saw firsthand how the world’s attention span shortened, the media cycle apathetic in the face of ongoing abuses against Uyghurs that were not news. I think the best strategy for Uyghur futures is aligning to a human rights framework, reinvigorating a social movement that demonstrates an ongoing commitment to Uyghur rights that outlives news media and political parties. That’s exactly what I tried to do at Amnesty International UK (AIUK).

Editorial: Mao Was a Vicious Dictator. The Uyghurs and Tibetans Paid the Highest Price
Mao Zedong's rule was marked by mass executions, political purges, forced labor, famine, torture, cultural destruction and military conquest. The Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution alone caused enormous human suffering and millions of deaths. Even the Chinese Communist Party acknowledged his grave mistakes and responsibility for catastrophic consequences. Beyond China, Mao's occupation of Uyghur and Tibetan homelands, followed by the persecution of their political leaders, intellectuals, religious figures and cultural institutions, established patterns of repression that have persisted for decades. These policies laid important historical foundations for the subsequent atrocities, including genocide and crimes against humanity.

🚨 URGENT: Two Uyghur men detained in Thailand face imminent deportation to China, where they risk arbitrary detention, torture, and even death.
In February 2025, Thailand forcibly deported 40 Uyghur men to China. Their fate remains unknown.
The World Uyghur Congress, Uyghur Human Rights Project, Campaign for Uyghurs, and other Uyghur organizations urge the Thai government not to repeat this grave mistake and enable further atrocities against deported Uyghurs in China.
China’s one-party dictatorship, the CCP, expels a record 33 senior members, including 16 military officials, under the direction of dictator Xi Jinping, who calls corruption the “biggest threat” to the Party.

US bans imports from BGI Genomics, MGI Tech over Uyghur forced labor
Washington says the Chinese genomics firms helped run genetic surveillance and forced labor programs targeting Uyghurs in the Uyghur region.
“Today, DHS is barring three Chinese DNA testing companies from allowing their goods to enter the United States unless importers can meet the law’s requirements. This is about enforcing our laws, protecting American businesses from unfair competition, and making clear that companies connected to forced labor will not get a free pass in this country.”

China’s Ethnic Unity Law in Practice: Nearly 100 Uyghur Police Reportedly Fired for Speaking Uyghur
Eight police officers at one station in Ghulja County were fired for speaking Uyghur among themselves. That is what a serving officer told Radio Free Asia. He said the number across the county could reach nearly 100.
The timing is hard to ignore. China’s Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress took effect on July 1. It promotes Mandarin and directs schools to build a strong sense of community among the Chinese nation. It also reaches into family education, cultural activities and ethnic integration.
