“Wildwood” director Travis Knight calls AI an “amazing piece of technology” but says, “I’m not embracing it at all.”
“I see technology as a tool, and we use technology at Laika. A pencil is technology, a paintbrush is technology, a 3D printer is technology. Technology is useful when you put it in the hands of people, when you put it in the hands of artists who can amplify their voice."
“Technology is not useful when it takes the place of the artist, and that’s the concern with generative AI,” he continued. “It’s an amazing piece of technology, but the concern is that when it supplants the artist, then we have an issue because the computer cannot speak about humanity at all. It doesn’t know what it feels like.”

I would absolutely love to see Olivia Wilde win the Oscar for Best Director for The Invite. She deserves it. This film is absolutely astonishing & better with every rewatch, largely because of her direction. Wilde shoots the hell out of the apartment in this movie. Her blocking/framing - all of her creative decisions left me floored. Wilde has pulled off a tremendous comeback after Don’t Worry Darling. I hope she gets recognized.

Tom Cruise says "I have nothing against TV or Netflix" and rumors of him being intense on movie sets are true.
“Movies are — this is about humanity. I have nothing against cable or TV or Netflix. I think it’s great. Create jobs and everything. But what I like about cinema is it is all of us coming together in a room and sharing an experience. When I’m working with people, I’m not afraid to, as I’m acting, to look foolish. It’s like: That’s not what this is about. It’s finding our tone, finding these tools together and having an experience. And look, I work hard, and people that work with me, they know. I expect a lot and I’m upfront about it. It’s like: ‘The rumors are true. And do you want this?’ I’m like, ‘Trust me, the rumors are true. I’ll be here before you. What experience do you want?' ... I also feel that level of responsibility for — I guess, for everyone. Even when I was a kid, they were like, 'Oh, come on, Tom. You’re so intense.' I’m like, 'I don’t know what to say. I am intense.' [Laughs.] I got a very good sense of humor about it, but it was like: When I’m interested in something, I want to learn it. I want to understand it. And you want to blast through the confusion and build up that ability.” (via GQ)

At Union Sq station, someone graffitied the station sign to say “Union Squarepants,” but then realized it was a memorial wall and wrote “I’m sorry, I will never forget.”

That John Williams wrote such an overly elaborate, densely orchestrated score, with dozens of themes & motifs, layered on top of each other in complex harmonies, for ostensibly a "children's" film is astounding.
He RESPECTED the audience. You'd likely get cutesy doodling today.
