💡Go with your gut — Louis explains that taking a chance on new startups often comes down to gut feel and optimism: “It's so easy to find things wrong in any early stage business, ultimately, do I like the founder enough? Is the space growing fast enough? Is this a good bet?”
💡Is it solving a problem? — Louis is all too aware that many ‘next big things’ come and go, and it's often because they’re a ‘solution that’s looking for a great problem’. It’s important to make sure that your new business idea is actually satisfying an unmet need.
💡Resilience is key — Louis admits that building a finding product market fit involves a lot of luck. So, he believes that the most important attribute of a successful early-stage company is having the resilience and grit to stick with it long enough for that luck to strike.
💡It’s all about the advisory board — For Louis, establishing an effective advisory board made up of three or four people with the right experience and information is vital when you’re the founder of a new business.

The parting piece of advice Kimberly would give her former self? “In hindsight, I should have focused sooner on what really excited me, found people who are super ambitious to work and learn with, push boundaries, and not take “no” for an answer!”
When it comes to entering a market with huge, well-established competitors as a scrappy new business yet to find product market fit, Kimberly has a solution that’s worked for her at Collective Benefits — “understanding client needs better than anyone else serving them.”
Kimberly argues that everyone should sit closely to growth. It ultimately comes down to defining the North Star Metric that captures the value that your business delivers, and communicating it to each function so that they know how they help the business to be bigger and better.
Kimberly warned against focusing on ‘joining up data’ — too many metrics can distract you from what you’re really trying to optimize for, and encouraged members to find the right metrics that act as the real source of truth.
