The holy martyrs Jean de Brébeuf and Isaac Jogues, priests, and their companions of the Society of Jesus: on this day Saint Jean de la Lande, religious, was killed by the pagans in a place called Ossernenon, in the territory of Canada [now in New York State]. A few years earlier in the same place, Saint René Goupil attained the crown of martyrdom. With one and the same veneration, their companions are also celebrated on this day: Saints Gabriel Lalemant, Antoine Daniel, Charles Garnier, and Noël Chabanel. After undertaking great labors in the mission among the Hurons in Canada, proclaiming the Gospel of Christ among the peoples of that region, they died on different days as martyrs.

Today is World Mission Sunday. Pope Pius XI established the day in 1926, and this year the Church celebrates its centenary.
Pope Leo XIV’s message for this year carries the theme “One in Christ, united in mission.” He asks the whole Church to renew its unity in Christ, since the unity of His disciples is directed toward mission “so that the world may believe.” He also thanks missionaries who leave home and family to bring the Gospel to difficult places and asks the faithful to keep them close in prayer.
The Apostolic Penitentiary has granted a plenary indulgence for World Mission Day. It is open to the faithful who receive Holy Communion and pray for the spread of the Gospel throughout the world, under the usual conditions: sacramental confession, prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father, and detachment from all sin. Confession may be made a few days before or after. The indulgence may also be applied to the souls of the faithful departed.

Feast of Saint Luke, Evangelist: according to tradition he was born to a pagan family in Antioch, and was a doctor by profession. Converted to faith in Christ, he became a cherished companion of the blessed Apostle Paul. In his Gospel he carefully recounted, as a scribe of the gentleness of Christ, everything that Jesus did and taught. Similarly, in the Acts of the Apostles he chronicled the beginnings of the life of the primitive Church as far as Saint Paul’s first dwelling in the City of Rome.

Saint Ignatius, bishop and martyr: a disciple of Saint John the Apostle, he was the second after Saint Peter to govern the Church of Antioch. He was condemned to the beasts in the reign of the Emperor Trajan and was taken to Rome where he was crowned with a glorious martyrdom. On the journey, while suffering the ferocity of the guards who were like leopards, he wrote seven letters to different Churches, in which he entreated the brethren to serve God in unity with the bishops, and not to impede his immolation as a victim for Christ.

Saint Hedwig, religious: Bavarian by birth, she became Duchess of Poland and was greatly devoted to assisting the poor, for whom she founded a hospice. After the death of her husband, Duke Henry, she spent the remaining years of her life fruitfully in the monastery of Cistercian nuns that she had founded, and where her daughter Gertrude governed as abbess. She died at Trzebnica in Poland on the fifteenth of October.

Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, a nun of the Order of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary: she ran along the way of perfection in an extraordinary manner and, endowed with mystical gifts, she was particularly zealous in her devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, accomplishing much to promote that cult throughout the Church. She fell asleep in the Lord at Paray-le-Monial in the territory of Autun in France, on the seventeenth of October.

My heart aches for the children, parents, and families of Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. No family should ever have to experience such fear and heartbreak. Please know that you are not alone. I hold you close in prayer, and the Church stands with you in this time of sorrow. We entrust those who have died to the loving mercy of Jesus Christ. May He embrace the grieving families and bring comfort to all who are suffering.

On his third day in hospital, Pope Leo XIV’s doctors say his chest X-ray in the morning shows “good recovery of the lung that underwent surgery.”
The Pope carried his daily activities independently and continues a full range of physiotherapy, as his postoperative recovery progresses normally.
Saint Teresa of Jesus, Doctor of the Church: she joined the Carmelite Order at Avila in Spain, and became the mother and teacher of the stricter observance. She envisioned the progress of prayer in her heart as the gradual ascent of the soul towards God, and underwent many trials for the reform of her Order, overcoming them with an undaunted spirit. She also composed works full of the most profound teaching, founded on her own experience.
