Five years ago, the one and only Solana Monkey Business was born on @solana.
None of us knew then that these pixelated Monkes would bring so many people together, or that the community around them would eventually become @MonkeDAO.
Since then, we’ve shared the highs, weathered the lows, laughed through more chaos than we could ever fit into one post, and watched Solana grow as we grew alongside it.
Five years later, we’re still here - connected by friendships that began behind a PFP, shared memories, and a global community that slowly became home.
Did you really think we’d let this anniversary pass quietly?

So today, we’re looking back at how it all began, how far we’ve come, and the journey that made @MonkeDAO what it is today.

A Solana staking rule changed recently and few paid attention. Maybe you saw it on the timeline, but not many have talked about it. Here's what SIMD-0490 just did.
TLDR: Solana just set a minimum for opening a new staking account. You now need at least 1 $SOL to open one. If you already have a smaller one, it's fine, this only affects new ones.

From now on, you can't open a new stake account with less than 1 SOL. If you already have a stake account holding less than that, it's untouched, it keeps staking and earning exactly as before. This change ONLY affects new accounts.
The reason is rent, which is what Solana calls the cost of keeping an account stored onchain. That cost was lowered across the network, which is a good thing, but if it drops far enough, opening a stake account becomes almost free, and that can- create a problem: someone could create huge numbers of tiny junk accounts, and every validator on the network has to carry the cost of storing all of them. The 1 SOL minimum is the new floor for rent reduction so that opening an account never gets cheap enough to abuse. Validator operators were consulted and were comfortable with it.
The accounts affected by this, the ones under 1 SOL, add up to roughly 0.02% of all the stake on Solana. For the network that's a rounding error. But those small accounts are often newbies, people trying staking out with an amount they won't miss while they learn how it works. A lot of the people we teach started there, with a fraction of a SOL. For new accounts that particular starting point is gone now.
Teaching people to take that first small step is a big part our efforts. If you're already staked with us for less than 1 SOL, you're fine. And if you're starting now and a full SOL is more than you want to risk on a first try, sit tight. We're working on a solution so you can continue supporting the GREED Academy 📕
