Unite has been warning that a perfect storm has been hanging over the auto industry for years.
'Death by a thousand cuts' has been going on under the nose of successive governments. Years of underinvestment, unsustainable ZEV mandates and high industrial energy costs are crippling the industry.
There must be further action. There have been intensive government discussions over the weekend to look at how to mitigate these job losses at JLR. The Business Secretary, Jonny Reynolds, and I are meeting the CEO of JLR next week.

Public control of West Midlands bus services welcomed👏👏🏼
@unitetheunion welcomes the decision today by the government and the West Midlands Combined Authority to safeguard jobs and services.
The fact that a single operator could put nearly the entire West Midlands’ bus network at risk is lunacy.
It is yet another example of how bus companies across the country are failing bus workers, passengers and communities in their drive to extract profits at the expense of jobs and services.
This is why Unite will keep campaigning for bus services everywhere in the UK to be brought back under public ownership.

On 4 October 1936, Oswald Mosley planned a provocative march of his Blackshirt thugs, driven by poisonous antisemitism, through East London’s Jewish community. London Jews and a coalition of the organised working class - many first generation Irish - mobilised over 100,000 people to oppose the fascist Blackshirts in what has become known as the Battle of Cable Street, the largest ever mobilisation against fascism in the UK.
The 5,000 fascists were unable to march, and the police redirected them – a massive humiliation for Mosley, and a historic victory for antifascism.
Unite will be supporting the major march and rally on the anniversary day. Meet Sunday 4 October at 12.00 outside Tower Hamlets Town Hall, march begins 13.00 (tube: Whitechapel).
On Saturday 3 October from 20.00 til late at Kachette in Shoreditch, Unite is also hosting a gig to mark the anniversary.
