it felt so obvious to me that she didnt “understand” the Who’s on First joke cuz her mind was elsewhere while watching the segment. just moments before she was visibly upset about her impending prison stay. she clearly wasnt focused on the comedy routine

where i think my problem actually lies is with this modern trend of pointing out what a film is "about" with such declarative power - as if just to state a film is "about" something is to uncover its TRUE central thesis, which trumps all other possible meanings or motivations
i hate the presumption that all films are metaphorical. so much so that even when they depict something literal that thing is being described as a stand-in for something else

the very act is now making people engage with every film like there is some true central "aboutness" to uncover, when i think for most films this is just not the case. most films are "about" many things. i like to engage with what's in front of me.

Candyman is my second favorite horror villain after the Cenobites. I guess Clive Barker really does it for me. I think what makes his horror icons so standout is they have this incredible stoicism and religiosity that I find so alluring. They have deep and complicated motivations
Candyman released 34 years ago today. 16 October 1992 🐝

they also project humility in that they are so ridiculous and over-the-top but because Clive is fully committed to the bit they dont read as camp. they are fun and engaging

They're also just so beautifully crafted, both visually & with how they speak. Candyman & Pinhead have my favorite onscreen horror dialogues of all time.

it's such a weird way to engage with film. why is everything presumed to be "really" about something else? why is it assumed to not be about the thing you're looking at in real-time
