In his retrospective study (2020–2024) at Mulago Hospital, Dr. Michael Kalongo compared surgical site infection (SSI) incidences between Linear Closure (LC) and Purse String Closure (PSC) following stoma reversal. He made this presentation in the ongoing ASOUCONF2026
Key Findings:
Study Group: 96 patients (77 LC vs. 19 PSC); 63.5% were ileostomies.
SSI Incidence: Overall SSI rate was 14.6%. After propensity score matching, the LC group showed a higher incidence (15.8%) compared to the PSC group (5.3%).
Outcome: Analysis suggests that Purse String Closure is associated with a significantly lower risk of SSI and reduced morbidity.
Conclusion & Recommendations:
Dr. Kalongo concluded that Purse String Closure is a superior technique for reducing infection rates. He recommended its increased adoption for stoma reversals, alongside strict adherence to perioperative antibiotic protocols to further improve patient outcomes.
