Building wealthtech in India means effectively the data-pipeline is password-protected PDFs and excels. APIs exist on paper but these files are the painful reality. Pretty quickly you're dealing with hundreds of formats: Every broker and institution, a different layout and they change without notice. When the output is someone's financial transactions, "right 99% of the time" is still a bug. No LLM does the parsing but I've used AI extensively upstream, writing hundreds of boring deterministic parsers that a team would normally take years to write.

Pet peeve: What’s with Indian schools calling children “wards”? It’s annoying to see the word in every school communication. Surely a British colonial hangover. And bizarrely, it has escaped into parents' WhatsApp groups. Not just school groups, but college ones too! As the parent of a kid who’s just started college, I’m seeing sentences like “I encourage my ward to be there” and “Let our wards adapt.” They're your kids, not beneficiaries of some Victorian estate! Lord have mercy.

No words can express the grief of losing those you love most. Performing their last rites yourself, a ritual this raw where you're handed the fire, hits even harder. And yet it is the ritual that carries you. Grief needs a container, and ritual is that container. You fold your hands and chant the same mantras, the same sequence of rice, sesame, water and fire performed in millions of Hindu homes, unbroken for millennia. Byung-Chul Han says rituals are to time what a home is to space: they make time habitable. Modern life is starved of ritual. We never lost it.

While building the Gita app I was genuinely surprised how well the semantic search turned out. I typed "how do I stop worrying about how things turn out" and the top result was 2.47, on doing your work and letting go of the outcome. It reads the intent, not the phrasing.

A 15-year-old dream has come true today. I started a PhD with the dream of creating a system that chants any Sanskrit shloka perfectly. And here I am opening sourcing 𝐕𝐚𝐠𝐝𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐮 - 𝐀 𝐯ṛ𝐭𝐭𝐚 (𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫) 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 ś𝐥𝐨𝐤𝐚-𝐭𝐨-𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭-𝐭𝐨-𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐡 (TTS) 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐤𝐫𝐢𝐭. This is the world's first vrutta-aware, open-source TTS for Sanskrit Chanting.

Raja Rao, my favourite writer in English. I first read this years ago and the passage came back to me with a weight I hadn't known it held. "The whole of the Gangetic plain is one song of saintly sorrow, as though Truth began where sorrow was accepted, and India began where Truth was acknowledged. So sorrow is our river, sorrow our earth, but the green of our trees and the white of our mountains are the affirmation that Truth is possible... Truth is the Himalaya, and Ganges humanity. That is why we throw the ashes of the dead to her...The cycle of death and birth goes on eternally like the snows and the rivers." (The Serpent and the Rope)
