Vice Chancellors knew that tuition fees were not indexed to inflation. They also knew that sources of international students can fluctuate wildly. Yet, VCs engaged in rampant debt-driven spending based on fraudulent projections. Was that incompetence, corruption, or both?

As we get ever closer to Welcome Week we hope everyone has had an opportunity to rest and take time away from working. Let's also hope that the new academic year is a little quieter and more 'normal' than we've had for a while.

You can’t have a university without research, because that’s where the teaching comes from and it’s what distinguishes higher education from other levels.
In depth: Will the funding crisis confine UK research to elite universities? At a time of increasing financial constraint, can a loss-making activity like research survive outside traditional institutions, asks Jack Grove bit.ly/3AyFPEb

A 15 yr old inter-railing is seen to be a child causing such outrage around it while a 15 yr old unaccompanied boy of minoritised identity escaping violence and seeking asylum is processed as an adult, and housed with older strange men in the UK putting them in danger. Diff rules.

If it is a university, then academics can criticise managers. If academics cannot criticise managers, then you can conclude the entity is no longer a university, but just a degree mill.
Should academics be free to publicly criticise their own institutions and managers/administrators without career consequences? Tell us in our Academic Freedom Survey bit.ly/3xR4NxG

Firefighters doing a fantastic job again. Thoughts with all affected. Why do authorities continue to ignore fire safety warnings we have made for years - esp since #Grenfell Utter scandal Hundreds of London firefighters attend Dagenham flats blaze theguardian.com/uk-news/arti…

Actual universities have departments regardless of fluctuations in the degree sales market, because they are research institutions. It is impossible to have an HEI that aligns lecturing capacity exactly to the market demand for degrees and also offer degrees of any value.

Uni degrees have substantive and symbolic value. The substantive part is the experience of meeting standards set by research academics. The symbolic part is access to a brand, a historical legacy of research or educating elites. Senior managers killed the former in 10 years.

SURVEY! The brilliant people @oubucu are seeking input from across the sector on the current state of redundancies: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F… Please help out, it doesn't take long but will be key in getting a sense of the impact of the shrinking of HE and how this has been handled

🚨BREAKING: Labour is set to repeal both the Minimum Service Levels and the 2016 Trade Union Act. The Tories brought these laws in to ban workers from defending jobs, pay and conditions. This legislation wouldn't be out of place under a dictatorship - good riddance.
